anybody have a stock intake box for a 02 tacoma 3.4 forsale or barter for some brewskies? Smog guy says mines have been "modified" because I drill a small hole and install a stud for relocating my igniter, so I failed the visual.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks

that’s annoying that they called you on something so stupid. Maybe try a different smog place? Or remove the stud and put some black fipg or silicone on the hole?

I feel for you. My first thought would be fix it like that and go somewhere else but a shop failed me once and no one else would smog it because it failed at a different shop...

I just bought one on ebay for $89.
An actual Toyota box is close to $500.

The knock off fits just fine. However, the plastic appears to be a bit thinner and the lid on top has a tiny bit of play in the hinge where as my 17 year old air box lid was still tight. It still seals just fine though.

Did they already put your truck in the system?

I had a guy refuse to inspect my truck because he said it would fail visual due to "fueling mods". The fueling mods he was referring to was my fuse block which has zero to do with anything in the engine. I took it to my usual shop and had no issues. The only reason this worked was the 1st guy had not entered my truck into the system.

LOL...I did the 'Deck Plate' mod on my '98 and had no trouble smogging it. The 'Deck Plate' mod was a 4" hole cut in the box and a marine style deck plate installed. It was supposed to be a poor man's CAI and reversible by screwing on the deck plate.
Got rid of the truck in '18 and not one smog tech mentioned it, not sure how it could be missed. I am calling BS on the smog tech.

I had a deck plate mod for years until last week when I had to replace the air box because it had a giant hole in it.
No one ever said anything to me either.

I also have a deck plate mod and never had any issues with it for smog.

Its this this bolt that they are complaining about,
When I installed my air comps I had to relocate the ignitor.

Is there a Toyota truck salvage yard in Rancho Cordova or something?

You might be able to get one there?

They dinged you because the hole is after the air filter. The 'Deck Plate' mod is done before the air filter.

I was under the impression that anything before the MAF sensor is fair game, but if you remove/relocate the MAF or do any non CARB approved mods after the MAF (like a turbo) then it's a no-pass situation

I don't see how having a bolt installed after the air filter is a problem, but then again a lot of smog shops have to play it extra safe to cover their asses. The penalties from the state are pretty severe

That was the gist of the conversation I had with the smog tech who wouldn't even look at my truck after he saw my blue seas fuse block.

He'd rather play it safe rather than look at my truck. It's their prerogative, it made him more nervous than he wanted to be. I'm just glad he didn't enter my truck into the system.

yeah definitely, once you get put in the system as a "fail" any other shop will probably be skeptical as well.

If I were the OP in this thread I would go to another shop and try again, I don't think he should fail for that bolt where it is

I go to the same shop every time, now that they know my truck its a pretty quick process, even with my supercharger and headers. Thankfully they haven't noticed the URD 7th injector kit lol.

Yeah, same here...after I left the shop that wouldn't test my truck I went back to the same shop I've been going to. No problems.

That's what I get for trying to save a few bucks via stupid groupon.

Well, I covered the bolt with a black cap to make it look stock and went to another shop, no issues, passed with flying colors. I think the other shop was just being really picky.

    Appreciate the help guys!!
