Wheel Differences

I’m about to buy a set of new wheels. Many on this site seem to really be partial to a few brands. Method, SCS, Volk, as opposed to the more common Fuel, Moto metal, etc. What is the reason for this? I ask because I really like the look of a set of American racing wheels but I’m leery because they are cheaper. I guess what are some considerations that I should be thinking about when comparing wheels?
Weight?
Scratch resistant?
More resistant to pitting?
Better weight distribution?
More resistant to bending?

I like having wheels you won’t see on a Dodge or Ford, went with SCS.

 

Yeah, I’m definitely looking for something less common and not blingy

 

I went for American Racing - only have 1 wheel as the other 3 are on backorder.

It may be that what they are looking for isn't available in the more common brands. If you go with the American Racing wheels, make sure they will fit. I really wanted the AR-23 American Racing wheels for my truck, but the 16" (same as my stock wheel) would not clear the brake caliper and they weren't available in 17". They were a lot cheaper ($150 /wheel) than most of the other brands, too. I finally found a Fuel design I liked, it fit in a 16" but I moved up to a 17". Only thing I don't like about them is that they cost $60 more per wheel than the American's did.

Wouldn't that be a bitch if they discontinued the wheel?
