What are you paying for 2020 Tacomas?

If it goes through the radiator, isn’t that cooling the trans fluid?

I like the idea of the aftermarket cooler, but a main reason I’m buying a new truck is to have everything under warranty. I’d hate to give the dealer/Toyota a reason to say it’s not covered under warranty should something fail like the transmission

I have a tendency to get a different truck every couple of years, wonder if this is a concern if I plan to sell the truck prior to the end of the warranty... I assume if the trans got hot and failed I’d be covered as long as I’m towing under the GVWR/Towing capacity..?

 

It passes through the (main) radiator? Not sure how that would work. The radiator has water and anti-freeze, the transmission has ATF, those two would not be good to mix together. The article that was linked earlier says that in the Tundra, Toyota is using a synthetic oil that withstands higher temperatures. They may be doing the same in the Tacoma.

 

technically yes- the transmission is being cooled by the radiator— but I suppose most would say that is only so efficient (and typical for non-towing applications). I think what it really comes down to is that Toyota has lowered the quality of their tow package and arguably th e capability but not the price wo th in the same model year. If you’re not towing significantly and not in high temps/significant climbs it may be a non issue beyond principle/transparency. I think scan guage is a great tool so I would say it’s a wonderful truck—maybe bring it up and try to reduce selling price, and add something that you can monitor your temps so you can just make sure you stay within normal ranges—. Main reason I bring it to this forum is bc I know for some people this will be a surprise after they buy. Good luck!

 

most standard vehicle radiators have separate plumbing inside for the coolant and for the trans fluid (So both fluids are separate but cooler via the radiator)— I’m honestly not familiar w the Tacoma’s that don’t have the aux trans cooler but that’s what I’ve read. I have to be honest I’m no expert on this but in my mind even if the atf can run at higher temps I still think higher heat on the transmission could decrease longevity (mainly bc higher heat not only can impact the atf fluid itself but the transmission seals, parts, etc).....so sure perhaps th e fluid can operate at higher temps but I’d be careful about the trans temps over 200 ....again for some people this may be a non issue- just throwing into the mix as you all are negotiating. I’m sure they are super simple to install but the whole point of a new truck to me is to have warranty on everything that’s not wearable (tires,shocks,etc). I could see the dealer or Toyota saying, the aux cooler must of failed and caused the transmission to fail so we’re not going to cover it because it’s been modified

 

I posted that for the guy who didnt understand how the ATF went through the radiator . I should have quoted him , have a good one .

 

I think you are referring to me. I didn't realize that the ATF cooler was in addition to it going through the regular radiator. That would make sense then that it would be easy to add an ATF cooler and for Toyota to easily omit it.

 

To clarify, is the aux cooler infront of the radiator (meaning closer to the grill) or behind the radiator (closing to the engine)?

Per your picture, it almost looks like the aux cooler is behind the radiator

The aux trans cooler is in front Of the radiator (that picture is oriented so that the front bumper/grill is to the right, and the radiator/engine bay to the left; I’m standing in front of the passenger front wheel looking down).

However, do I only have a choice between $1000 rebate or 1.9% interest rate if I want to finance thru Toyota?

 

As far as I know current Toyota incentives only include 2020 Tacomas.

Old quotes I saw prior to proceeding with a 2021 included both the $1000 rebate and the offer of 1.9% interest. At least, the few dealers I spoke to made it seem that way.

The lower rates might make a come back. Inventory seems to be up, and I think sales are down, and that trend could continue.
