Paper GPS FTW.

 

Obviously you have never had to deal with a LT holding a compass and a map.

 

Since you have a 2020, at least you have the option to use Apple/Google maps. Just do that if the OEM navigation bothers you to that extent.

 

Nothing like plotting points on your map and counting your trucks paces while landnaving on the highway. That’s after converting mag north to grid north, obviously.

 

Look at Tesla drivers using "Auto Pilot" and crashing.

Orienteering kills fun dead.

I went on a backpacking trip once with some dorks that tucked their shirts in and stopped every fifteen minutes to take a reading and look at the topo. It was like going to the movies and just staring at and squeezing all the parts of your stadium seat for the whole two hours with only the occasional glimpse of the film.

There is something to be said for getting lost. My friends and I 4wheel, ride ATV's or Dual-Sport MC's in our local mountains and deserts at least once monthly (well, not this month because all of the trails we like to ride in the mountains are currently closed because of fire or threat of fire but I digress). One of my friends is a GPS Geek and he does a great job downloading waypoints ahead of time, reading on-line about trail conditions, etc. I tend to navigate more by paper maps which I've written notes all over, a handheld GPS which usually is just logging my mileage for the day and might have a few random waypoints saved in it named things such as "abandoned car" or "that scary hill which leads to nowhere". I navigate mostly by memory, and usually do a pretty decent job. On one of our rides in the forest north of Big Bear Lake I was looking for an old Mine I'd been to a couple of years previous; I knew we were in the right area but the trails were leading us to the wrong parts of the forest. At one point I stopped and told everyone we needed to turn around (again) as this wasn't the trail either; the trees were all wrong. I thought I'd said that last part low enough no one had heard me through their helmets but I didn't and my GPS-loving friend threw-up his arms and said, "Great, now we're navigating my tree!" It's sort of become a running joke in our group.

 

OK. Stop making me laugh.

 

Better than my MDX's navy. That s**t is so confused and slow that it still re-routs and navigates for 10 minutes after you parked

I was disappointed early on by the entune navigation on a few routes, and that was enough to break my trust. Sometimes, I run entune nav and Google nav on my phone simultaneously just to see the difference. Entune would have led me astray many more times, sending me down pointless side streets link back up with an arterial road...or to jump off the freeway just to get back on a few miles down the road.

Nope. Don't trust it.

 

A friend of mine was using the built in Nav system earlier this year when we were in Texas for a hunting trip. We were outside of the city in a rural area and the system always sent us the long way and often told us about turns after were were well past them. His is a 2017 or 18 TRD.

When I got my Tacoma I looked at the built in system and saw that I needed to install GPS Scout on my phone for it to work. I read the reviews for that at the Google Play store and saw a lot of negative comments and 1 star reviews. I decided just to keep on using Waze. It's too bad because I'd love to use the built in Nav system.

Oh well.

 

Mine was defaulting to use "unimproved roads". So it took some rather ... scenic routes that occasionally needed 4WD! I turned that off and it takes the same route that Google Maps chooses unless there is a new road or construction that it didn't know about.

 

The nav system works without input from your phone

 

never heard that one before... is that something new?

 

Get a phone mount from Target and use google maps

 

I'll have to recheck that, as the manual clearly said something about installing the app. Maybe I misread it.

 

maybe if you want to look up something on your phone and have it show up on your nav screen. But the nav itself works without your phone
