TORSPD: NEVR

Just out of curiosity since I'm sure you know things and stuff. I have this pie-in-the-sky idea to import a regular cab 2nd gen Tacoma from the US. They didn't sell them up here. Then do it up like crazy, probably turbo kit. How much would a regular cab MT that's in good condition sell for? And pretend that the guy did a few upgrades like a modest lift and tires, maybe fenders too.

 

To be honest, I have no clue.

Not sure of any regular cab V6's being made here, after the 1st Gen. Very rare perhaps? Across the ponds, there have been.

 

The only way to get the 4.0 in a reg cab 2nd gen is to swap one in. As far as I know they only ever came with the 4 banger regardless of trim level.
Would be an awesome swap though.

 

I have looked briefly and there are some, but appear to be 4cyl. 4cyl turbo build would appeal to me. Lighter truck and better weight distribution

 

Add a turbo, and it would be a beast! Small Borg Warner EFR or Garrett G25-550.

I think I have see a swap like that. Maybe on here?

Yea i was hesitant, i don't mean to patronize the guy; but like his truck and everything he's contributed to TW is some gold i couldn't keep that to myself. Sux he hasn't done a build thread

If I understand you correctly, then I take it you have the 2.7?

Plain and simply, turbo is the best option for that engine. Simple to install or have a header made for it. With very little investment (respectively) you could have easily had over 500 whp with that engine.

What are your goals? What are your time frames? What is your skill level? That seesaws with depth of purse. What challenges do you want to tackle?

We all weigh those options from an individual point of view.

That's the point of modding, building, and personalizing. Be you. Do you. Share what you have learned. Enjoy your journey.

Otherwise we'd all have the exact same story.

 

2TR and 3RZ are practically the same engines. Easily built and very strong. Proven to make very good numbers. Turbo of course.

What is it you're really trying to figure out? I already laid it all out above. Your heart already seems to be settled on what to do. Do it.

 

Side note, we did have to replace the clutch on my friend's truck. We also upgraded the 5th injector, and refined the tuning as best we could with what little capability we had with the MAP-ECU3. Needs OV Tune.

Having an R155( I believe that's what it is.), it is plenty robust for higher torque numbers.

Had I been more persuasive, it would have had a turbo kit, made and installed by my hands. Might still happen. Least amount of down time.

As it is currently, the Rotrex blew over a year ago. Swapped on an OEM belt, and drives N/A. Work truck needs more torque, but also has to have little down time.

 

Well, installing a domestic company's engine is like having sex with men. I don't even need to try it in order to know it's not my thing.

Humor and homophobia aside though, like @Torspd said, you do the project that makes you happy. I have found it pretty satisfying to experiment with bolt ons to my TRD supercharger. Having double the wheel torque of a stock 1GR is pretty fun, especially considering I like doing that kind of work and I didn't have to take the engine out of the truck to get it.

LS swaps are a little cliché to me. Would be a fun project, don't get me wrong. I can't imagine it being cheap though... and your comment about waste-of-money SC kit, well, all things considered your power gain to money ratio is pretty good especially when you consider it's a 4cyl. With a few critical mods on top of the SC kit you'd have a truck that rivals horsepower and torque of a stock 4.0L TRD supercharged truck.

Anyways I think you see what I'm getting at, we all can rationalize whatever project we decide to undertake.

 

I do not understand why you have to have such an attitude. Tor has always been willing to answer my questions even when they were pretty dumb. He has built the most powerful truck on TW and has overcome many obstacles along the way. You may or may not want to take his advice but you can still be respectful. It is unfortunate that you had a bad experience with the Rotrex but don't take it out on other people. You can always catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
