Is renting a CVT/bed mounted tent a good idea?

Want to take the family camping and would like to try out a mounted tent before I buy. Has anyone ever rented before? Where did you rent from?

 

I don't know if you can rent RTT's TBH.

 

Your going to stick your family in a roof top tent ? Get a ground tent your family will be much happier . Think about it have u ever tried to change inside a tent u can’t stand in and then have to climb a dam ladder to get in and out . Roof top tents are a fad .

Rent a motor home.

Your family will probably kill you half way through the trip and feed you to buzzards if you try and make them use a roof top tent.

 

I like my RTT but only for myself to use, or me and my wife.

When my daughter is old enough to camp with us, I'll definitely be using a ground tent for those trips. I can't imagine having a group of people in an RTT, even one of those giant 4+ person ones.

 

Saw a couple of Titus vehicles out in CO -- they apparently rent 4Runners with a Roofnest tent on top.

 

+1 On the rent a Motorhome or a Travel Trailer comment. I've done both, the Travel Trailer was easiest because it was set-up and waiting for us at the campground when we got there. I now have my own Travel Trailer. Renting one was how I determined that for my situation a Travel Trailer was a better match than a motorhome would be.

My RTT Story: Last summer a friend and I went on a camping/Dual-Sport Riding trip in the Eastern Sierra's. I had my Travel Trailer, my friend stayed in the RTT on top of his F-150. It was fine, he'd used it before and likes it. They're not really my thing but I get the appeal. We were staying in a developed campground so the Bear thing really wasn't much of an issue.

The morning my friend was to go home we had some really strong winds whip-up. We fought that RTT for probably thirty minutes trying to get it to close, finally I tell my friend that I need to stand on the roof of his truck in order to get the tent to fold in-half. He agrees then tells me to be careful because he rembered reading something in the owners manual about not standing on the roof of the truck. I stopped what I was doing, looked at him and said "...I'm pretty sure there's something in that manual about not building a house on top of your truck either!" We laughed about it, eventually

Credit where credit is due though one night on that same trip a storm blew-in and for two hours we got pounded with strong winds, rain and possibly hail. My friends RTT handled it all very well.

 

Haters gon hate, roof top tents are sweet. That said, I wouldn’t want a third person in mine.

 

There are about 20 RTTs in my area. Wanna guess what 19 of them are bolted to? I would think more jeep guys would use them but it’s pretty much exclusive to Tacoma’s here.

 

RTT gets really good ventilation in warm months. Gets me off the snow in cold months.

Can mount to a small 5x8 trailer in a pinch.

Have a ground tent as a backup.

 

Airbnb rents out vehicles that have roof top tents. Might have some luck there.

RTT’s aren’t a fad, they are an enhanced way to camp!

My family loves our RTT. I just help my 3 year old on the ladder. It’s so comfortable. After a 17 day trip in September with a ground tent we decided to get the RTT because finding space for a ground tent on mtn passes sucks.

 

Not to argue but I'm in the 'it's a fad' camp too. But to each their own, as long as you're getting-out and enjoying the great outdoors that's what matters.

Yup, love it! Sets up in one minute but that Annex is another story.

 

I wanted one, but decided against it. Also, I dont camp in one place long enough to make that setup worth it
