front diff pop upon disengagement

Hello TW, I love the forum. I am a pretty new taco owner ( 06 long bed, crew cab, 4x4 trd sport, with 3" lift. I have only had the truck for 6 months and It's the best truck i've ever had. I installed the lift without doing research and then found out the spacers are not a good choice. I will install 5100's soon. I recently took the truck to colorado in the mountains and used 4wd a lot. I noticed a pop in the front diff while disengaging to 2hi. The light blinks for a minute, then you hear and feel a pop. Is this normal? It works great while in 2hi or in 4wd, just makes noise when you take it out.

 

ya mine did the same, asked the dealer and they said make sure to be coasting not accelerating when you disengag. hasn't done it since

 

Yup...When you go to 2HI the actuator has to separate the gears in the front...If they have a load on them or the timing is just right there can be some tension left in there and they will pop when they pull apart.
No big...That coasting trick will help too...

I just give it a bit of gas then take my foot off the pedal before making the switch back into 2wd...no clunk noise!

 

Try not to disengage while on the gas or turning. Ideally, engage/disengage 4WD while going in a straight line and coasting.

That said, this is no big deal. The system is built to handle this stuff.

 

thanks everyone, that answers the question. Both times it did it, I was coming down off the mountain and was engine braking, so it makes since. I was just concerned as I did not hear it before. I hope to post pics of my taco soon.
