Any woodworkers?

I was looking at the engine in there today and I was wondering how many cylinders are in that motor? It surprised me how similar it looked my 85s 22re motor honestly.

 

It's a little 2.2L 4 popper

 

That would explain why it was so reminiscent of the 22re. I’m pretty uneducated about forklifts maybe you can educate me, is it just gearing ratios that allow the things to move such ridiculous amounts of weight as if there is no extra weight? I know the forks are all hydraulics but as far as the driving goes, just gearing?

I don't do traditional timber framing per se , but I use a lot of heavy timber in my houses

I use a 16" Makita circular saw , a 10" Makita circular saw and a 16" Makita electric chainsaw for cutting and plunging knife plates

 

I love the 16” circular saw. That’s a real saw.

I basically use those same tools and then a 7 1/4 circular and big ass chisels to do most of the joinery. Curvy rafter tails are with the mafell 12” portable bandsaw. Also the makita chain mortiser for mortises.

Nice, did you cut those thin veneer strips off of stock? Or did you get veneer and cut it into the little strips?

 

For now i had to buy the veneer sheets, once i get my table saw again i can cut my own.

 

Right on, if you want I can show you a sweet table saw jig for safely cutting paper thin strips of wood, repeatedly.

Speaking of wood structures...



My dad and I built this wood shed last fall. The posts are made from white oak that we cut down and stripped the bark off. No footers or attachments to avoid needing a permit in our town. The “joists” are recycled laminated 6x12s that we had laying around. Rafters are regular 2x10s and there’s an asphalt shingle roof on top.

 

Looks awesome! I like the knee braces you did. Doing timber framing I’ve learned a lot of terms so I know what piece is being cut. When you say “joist” what you are referring to is the ‘plate beam’ or just beam. I’d call it a plate beam because it’s supporting the joists. The posts and the plate beam make a bent.

Your two bents are supporting your joists.

The joists are your 2x10s in that kind of construction. Although, with that kind of flat roof construction, those members are kind of acting as both a joist and a rafter. When you are beyond the plate beam it’s acting more as rafter, when you are in between the two Bents, it’s acting more as a joist. That’s to the best of my knowledge. If I am wrong I would welcome corrections, as I am always learning more about the technical terms.

 

This is a cutting board I made for the lady one last Xmaswalnut base wood, zebra ebony for the little trim and really old dried fir for the heart(the idea was to have a softer wood where the cutting would be done). She has never cut anything on it and put it on display hahah. “But I made it for you to cut on!” I tell her.

Yeah I have no idea what the proper term is, if they were in a house they would be a floor joist (in a basement) or a wall plate (supporting a roof), but there’s no walls technically soooo I guess they’d be a plate beam. Whatever it is, it’s a big ass piece of wood.

 

Yep, the ring and pinion in those things are STOUT and have lotsa teeth. Remember, max speed on your truck ungoverned is only like 8-12mph (forget which on that model off the top of my head). I forget the curb weight on that truck, but it's something close to 8,000lbs. The counterweight in the back weighs close to 5k lbs.

 

Right. That’s makes sense, I’ve always wondered how heavy that big chunk of a back weighed. . The only sad thing is it’s not my Lifttruck but the owner of the shops (though I do the driving most of the time) I was educating him on how awesome of a lift he got, thanks to you!
He will own it in about 2 years or maybe less.

Now, he won’t be doing this forever and I’m the only other person in the shop.... so if all the right cards get played maybe one day I’ll have the opportunity to ‘buy’ the business or take it over.

And one I made for my parents, complete with a wooden knife and heres a carving I did. I thought about selling it before I made it but it’s just stayed on my wall ever since.

 

Finished these for a customer today.
