FRONT DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEMS

I got a 2008 4x4 Taco, 6” Fabtech lift kit on it. 35” tires.I just had the front diff and axles replaced on it because I was hearing/feeling a grind of some sort that seemed to be coming from where the diff would sit below the vehicle. Leaking front diff, shards in the fluid. I got new wheel bearings replaced, new control arms, new axles and Front Diff and the grind sound and vibe has come back!! It hasn’t even been 3 weeks since I last got it replaced.

So, all of the stuff that rotates in 2WD is new. Take it back to the shop and bitch.

 

Does the noise go away in 4wd? Maybe it needs the ecgs bushing

 

Well it has me thinking it might be a deeper issue with driveline angles? I know that this has been a pretty big issues on these Gen 2 that get lifted. I’m just at a loss, luckily I have a warranty from Firestone but I don’t want to replace it without addressing the bigger issue and just have it go bad on me again

How many miles on vehicle? You replaced all that stuff without first diagnosing what the vibe was ? I'm guessing bad needle bearing. Actually 2nd gen tacoma can be lifted without any problems but an educated process must be used. You can fit 35's or even 37's with a 3 inch lift and some other work.

 

I’m guessing needle bearing. Does it go away in 4 hi?

 

110k Na the front diff was leaking a pretty good amount and was shaking when I started to take off and when I had it looked at there was some shard in the fluid.

 

It’s really only noticeable at around 40 mph if I keep it there it whines pretty loud from inside the cab

 

Do you think there’s anyway that the 35” tires are too big for stock Toyota axle and front diff ?

 

I really only hear it at about 40mph, but I’ll drive it tomorrow in 4H at that speed and see if I hear it.

 

6” lift. 35s. Leaking front diff. Who knows. I’d sort through the vibe diagnosis @gearcruncher put together to diagnose before replacing more stuff...

IMO. No. That is a definate NO.

Stock 2nd gen tacoma will handle 35"tires no problem.

 

Where is the front differential leaking from?
Do you still have the old differential?
It would have been nice to know why the old Differential failed.

I’ll also go with the rest, run it in 4WD and see if it changes.
Hopefully a bushing is all that’s needed to clear this up.

 

The rotating/whirring noise does not go away in 4H

 

As someone stated before the front diff doesn't turn in 2WD so if it's making noise it isn't inside the diff or front drive shaft.
