Why would I be joking? I think starting by seeing if your software calls home would be a good start for attempting to unlock tunes.

Lets not burn our best bridge to make the kit work. it will take too much time to recover the same ground.

Great so you want to violate our EULA.

I never understand why people go out of their way just to make things more difficult. We will relay your name and info to Magnuson for a BOLO.

After seeing the 0-60 video compared to a stock truck and the 6th gear 60-80mph pull, I have to agree with the owner of that truck, it’s disappointing. My ovtune superfob 2.0 tune does better then that for a tiny fraction of the cost. Thanks @Bascoma for the videos, your honest reviews/videos were exactly what I needed. I’m not saying I won’t ever get the SC, but I can say now for certain that it’s off my buying list for the foreseeable future until Magnuson or others can get it to perform MUCH better. Low end torque and responsiveness is what truly I really wanted from the SC, more top end would have been just icing on the cake. The best this SC seems to be so far is being able to lick the spoon after the cake has been made.

After watching @Bascoma's video and the tacoma beast video of the install I'm on the fence about my pending order. I guess I need an oil separator, and longer intercooler lines ( have winch and victory 4x4 high clearance bumper) and a boost gauge. Then start working on a tune. I'm thinking I should just order new 3rd members at the same time. The claim it is only for lightly modified vehicles (stock gears, 33" tires), with a manual I don't see how it's relevant. What does the tune have to do with gearing with a manual ?

Maybe that’s why the influencers don’t post a dyno and review. They know it’s whack!

just looking at the TVS1900 unit itself, the thing looks great, hugely capable on paper and I'm sure in the R&D shop as well. from my POV, however, the only way to actually make use of it is what Jowett is doing here, which basically takes the hardware as a starting point, modifying at the expense of the warranty, and developing around it yourself including the tune. i bet he'll nail it but that's not what most are signing up for. i would cancel that order and not look back. if they (Mag) get it happening later you will know, and there would be no real advantage to already having a kit. and maybe they will update something on the kit that you would need to deal with. just more headaches.

in a MT the gearing won't matter, although these things could change the feel of the tune and power response, etc.

interesting stance and one I don’t disagree with. But what happens when you take Toyota’s IP into consideration?

    look at it this way,
Toyota spends the time / money / investment to make a tune for their engine, and encrypts access to said tune
Someone cracks the access to tune (not OVT), and allows people like OVT modify tune.
Let’s be VERY clear here. OTV has spent an absolute tone of hours / time / everything in creating what he has. And I am not underestimating that in any way shape or form. But he is NOT creating a tune from scratch. he is taking the Toyota binary information / understanding WTF they are doing and modifying it to make it better for all of us. (That in itself is a huge feat).
But Then locking it again and saying you are stealing IP by using / reading a modified binary. This is where ethically I have an issue.
Take someone else’s shit, decrypt their encryption, modify binary (completely fine with that). But then encrypt it again and accuse people of sealing IP by trying to get access to it. Seriously that’s EXACTLY what you just did to Toyota.

not taking anything away from time and effort OVT put into this in any way shape or form. And he deserves to get paid and recognition for that. But braking (or using someone’s) broken encryption to modify something only to re encrypted and accuse others of stealing IP for doing the exact same thing is simply double standards. Just IMO. I do this shit for a living, and know will take a lot of flack from people who really don’t understand this space. So probably won’t post again on this topic.

I thought the same way, but personally, I think if someone cracked it again the legal side wouldn't hold up because how they got there to begin with.
Toyota developed it and locked it up.
    Toyota sells it locked up.
Somebody breaks it, mods it, locks it up and sells it.
The next step logically would be for someone to break it mod it and lock it up.

Isn't this what every single tuner does?

    totally quoting out of context.

But to your real point, that kinda depends. Ones that modify stock ECU binary yes. But I’ve not heard of anyone re-encrypting and calling it stealing IP if you try to read or modify their version.
There are also other ways to tune (many are less than optimal IMO) that are not stealing IP to start with. You can put “parasite“ upstream or downstream of ECU, or simply replace the ECU ( on some vehicles), neither of those are stealing IP to start with. (Replacing ECU can get into this territory due to communications, but there is also issues about the legality of claiming copyright on a communication protocol that was invented in 1970 which is what basically all cars use).

As I said, no issue with what OVT has done, and Total respect for the time / effort / knoladge he has put into this and absolutely deserves to be paid for that work. But re encryption and calling it stealing IP is where I do have an issue. But that’s just me and my view.

I probably don’t understand, but isn’t what OVT is selling is the user interface to change the binary code that Toyota wrote ? In the product VF tuner. My OV tunes aren’t locked I can open and adjust them with the VF tuner interface. Prior to having VF tuner their tunes were “locked” because there wasn’t an interface to read them. That’s just how I understand it.

That’s exactly what it is. The program to modify the factory ecu code.

Would leaving it unencrypted for everyone to steal including rival businesses be the way to go then?
