I've had a 2nd Gen Crew Cab (in Atlanta) for 2 years but I just bought an '03 Xtra 4x4 for here in the Bahamas. Its going to see some sand and get wet so I was thing about a bit of lift.

Assume I know nothing about this (really- nothing). What does 3" of lift look like? It sounds modest which is what I'm after. I did some searching here but still have some pretty basic gaps in understanding in terms of what I need.

    I found these guys: http://www.cornfedsuspension.com/
Is their 3" package pretty much what I need? I should prob replace the shocks at the same time as they look like OEM and pretty old. Bilstein HD's?
Also tires and/or wheels for mainly road (no highways) but occasional sand hard packed dirt?

    Opinions welcome.

I have a 3.5" suspension lift from RevTek. Its pretty modest but give it a nice stance. I have 265/75/16... Definitely replace your shocks and everything while you have it apart. No reason to have to take it apart again...

Thanks- so I want a set of 4 x Bils 5100 to go with that then? When you say "everything"; what else besides the shocks and the kit (incl AAL)?

if you're looking for a modest lift, ~3", and want to replace all the shocks, I would recommend going with Billstein 5100s and an add a leaf in the rear. The front shocks are pre-load height adjustable, meaning when before mounting the coil you can adjust the coil perch to three different heights, stock, ~1" lift, or ~2.5" lift, using the factory coil springs. The add a leaf for the rear is an extra arched single leaf you add into the rear leaf pack for ~2" of lift. just installed this set up on my 02 Xtra cab, about 4 hours for the AAL and another 3-4 hours for the fronts. I did this install by myself, with handtools, and help of only a rack of my favorite beer. Turned out great, and fit 285/75/R16s Toyo M/Ts (a 33" tire). For about $400 total you can buy the 5100s from downsouthmotorsports.com, the AALs from toytectlifts.com as well as a new bushing set for the front shocks as they are not included with the shocks sold from downsouthmotorsports, but for the price you can not beat it.

Cheapest option, less than most any coil spacer kits which would have a metal or polyurethane spacer which mounts on top of the factory coils and blocks for the rear lift.

Sounds like you're in the same boat as I was, wanting a moderate lift at a good price, needing new shocks all the way around. I can't say how pleased I am with the new ride of the truck. Stiffens up the factory suspension perfectly to lift the truck and improve the ride.

If you're looking for 2"-3", I'd go with 5100's set up front (set to 2.5") and a 2" AAL in the back.

Thanks man. You got a sharp looking truck - those black rims really pull it together.

The 5100's and AAL are great. Rides and handles real well

yeah, downsouth is the only way to go for the 5100s, forgot to mention the tacoma world discount.

So 5100s from DS. I wonder why their AAL +$100 is more than Toytech??

Any other bits I need (bushings etc.)?

This is the truck in question btw:

    Nice looking truck.

If these are the DSM AAL's you're talking about, the reason they're more expensive is because they are a 'progressive' pack - meaning they have three leaves instead of one. This pack only does 1.5", where they single leaf ToyTec does 2". Keep in mind though that the lift will 'settle' a little bit. I've probably got about 1.5" of lift with a 2" AAL.

I didn't get bushings, but you might feel better if you have new ones. You might want longer U-bolts too. I think you can pick those up for $30 at ToyTec. They're not necessary, but it can bring some peace of mind to have new ones.

    Ok 5110's etc. ordered.

Lets talk tires. What can I put on the stock wheels and height knowing I will definitely lift about 2-3" very soon, and, possibly get some new wheels at some point. The Toyos above ^^ look sweet but a tad aggressive for my purposes. Suggestions?

Goodyear duratracs. 265/75/16 would be good.

They look aggressive and have great reviews- though more references to grip in snow than sand (none) which is what I'll encounter.

Tirerack has them for $176 a piece. No probs with that size on stock rims and height for the time being?

That size will just barely rub at full lock on a stock truck. Otherwise they fit fine. They are a very capable off-road tire, so I'm sure they would be fine for sand. There's bound to be people on here that would know...
