    Open the finder. Then At the top of the screen you will see an apple symbol, the the word finder then file and so on. Your going to click on Finder, then preferences. The other way you can access this is if you open your finder and you "control" "click" the side bar of the finder (left side). Then select open side bar preferences. Next while your under the finder preferences menu your going to select the "sidebar" logo at the top of the preferences menu, its a graphic that looks the part. Here you can select what you want to display under your finder windows. Also while under this menu you can select GENERAL in the top of the menu ( again a graphic ). It will allow you from this selection to add hard drive images, ipods, disc images, and so on to your desktop when they are found present by the computer. If you want a hard drive displayed on your desktop this is the way to define that function.

    Any other questions just pm me! MAC ROCKS!

    How do I know what kind of background processes are running and how to disable them. I'm talking things like Canon's Image browser software that likes to open when you insert a flash drive.
    Or Growl, (I like growl, but its a good example)

    Command line savvy is also welcome.
    ps -fu <username> is where I would think to start, but how to disable some of the inevitable bloat ware accumulation?

    -Thanks!

    If your trying to sell it and you already have your info off the computer do the following. DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR INFORMATION!

    1st. Create a new user.
    2nd. Delete all other users ( keep the new user you created ). When it asks if you wish to keep the home folders select NO.
    3rd. Open the new user and log in. Click on finder. Click on applications. CLick on utilities. Click on disk utility. Click on the hard drive image on the left hand side of the disk utility window. Then click on repair, if repair is not available click on verify then after that click on repair.
    4th. Re start your computer.
    5th. Run your updates to see if you need any. If so install and re-start.

    If this doesnt help then you have to re-install your os system. The disk came with your computer. Just put it in and install. If this is still not helping than you may have a crap hard drive or you may just need to bump your memory because you are running high end graphics with low end power.

    Because they are mass produced in china. Buy a dock if you want a quality charging system.... but most people think its crazy to spend $49 on a dock! and most people are cheap bastards so they keep there crap chargers and just keep buying them, not realizing that by now they have spend the equivalent if not more. lol Griffin makes a good power dock but I still think your better off buying a thicker cable from a place like monster and just using your junk chargers when your traveling.

    True, but how can you stop things permanently from starting up again?

    BBigs .... why do PC users believe that they can buy a PC with "exactly" the same specs as a Mac for a significantly lower price? Where do they get this incorrect information??

    You can adjust the items you have startup automatically by going to
    >Apple
    -->System Preferences
    ---->Accounts
    ------>Login Items

    You can change how things start up as mudfish quotes below. However this will only show you the applications that are "asking" to start up. There are several processes that start up with out you knowing, many 3rd party applications that slow the computer down do so because they are using 10 or so reference applications to get info or log in to the net randomly. I would recommend that you delete any applications that your not using or that would be considered spam ware. Otherwise what are you trying to stop? The only reason I ask is because macs are pretty lean, and only run what is needed to do a specific process.... so unless your manually going in and requesting something like photoshop or itunes, than I would need to know what your trying to get rid of....

    and as always F*CK LIMEWIRE!!! DONT USE IT!!

    I believe most of these users are correct. HOWEVER they are not comparing apples to apples ( lol thank you). I have a friend who used to do this, he got his laptop same time as me. He paid 2200. I paid 3K. He bragged and bragged about his kit and how it had better this and that.... 1 year later he had a new one..... slight upgrade. Sold his for 800. I did the same.... Sold mine for 2800. LOL

    When you buy crap, and do it in bulk... ya you are going to get a better deal. If your sole purpose is short term use.... say 3 months or so. But if you care about design, function, and performance.... well then you spend a little more

    I am having trouble playing my 5th gen nano on my pioneer deck. I have an adapter plugged into the Ibus connector on the back of deck with the deck set on AUX. My 2nd gen nano works fine but when I pull in my new ipod it turns on the ipods internal speaker. I understand that the two gens work on different voltages (5v compared to 12v) but I disconnected the charging. Is there a way to set the ipod to acknowledge the signal from the charge port?

    Do a hard reset with it plugged in. That should let it register in order and pick up whatever its on, ( power , location, sync, on ). A friend of mine had that issue with his first ipod touch, and his pioneer deck. All he had to do was that and it worked great.

    and ok, I own mac products. but in my defense I boot 3 different OS's on my MB Pro, and own the Iphone purely because apple is the lesser of the evils as far as info security (In my opinion)

    I can't understand what you said but I'm going to try my best. First off you plug your new external drive in and set it up with the backup program (iirc it's time capsule). It's pretty straightforward. Then you computer will make backups to the drive in the background while you do other things. It will NOT remove information from your computer while doing this, it makes a copy or an image (I haven't looked to see which).
    If you asking whether it will do a wipe and restore when you wish to restore to a fresh computer, I haven't looked at that process.
    If you are just adding RAM there is no need to do a restore. If you are changing hard drives, you of course need to restore onto the new drive, but your first hurdle is the install. Desktops are easy, but I think it breaks warranty on laptops if you don't have the apple store do the service. If you are out of warranty or don't care I believe it takes a special screw driver
