I just changed my air filter on my 2015 and noticed this part. I'm guessing its a secondary filter.20200926_131131.jpg

Charcoal filter for the engine?? Why?

The engine doesn't care what the air smells like.

This is an explanation from another forum...

"Fuel evap. It sits directly behind the engine air intake filter to prevent gas fumes from escaping...then the fumes that collect on the filter are sucked into the engine when it's started up."

It may actually be a carbon filter :notsure:

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
Carbon filter to pick up any evil gas fumes that might try to escape into the atmosphere.

I removed mine at 100k on the odometer just to see if it made any difference in mpg. None whatsoever. Leave it or remove it. It doesn't affect the engine, just your environmental sensibilities.

Pretty sure these are standard or recommended in smog states- CALIFORNIA

you will NOT pass smog in CA if you remove the filter and happen to get a tech that checks.

But like stated it makes zero performance differences.

This filter does appear to restrict airflow and as it may seem like no difference is made, when you really have to get up and go, you notice a difference in the higher rpm's. Overall i've noticed slightly better mpg. Also i've heard this helps a lot with towing, but I haven't had time to test that yet.
