I'd prefer to do a sliding gate too, but it won't work for the location (see pic). I'm not against a single 16' gate, but I think it'd be a pain in the ass with the weight and forces involved...

You may be wanting something fancier, but this one's 16'. Ranch gate is pretty lightweight. Ghost controls opener. 6" steel bollards 3' buried in quickrete and 4' exposed. Way overkill on the bollards but they were available for $Free.99

Just finished up this one this week. Usually avoid doing gates but this was for a buddy. Don’t mind the dirty fingerprints :rofl:1738DA4D-90CC-40B6-9140-D16F3CE63A63.jpg79000D3C-56EF-48EA-A2FD-DF4D00736B94.jpg9558EF57-9340-445F-AD02-022FD07633A8.jpg

Sorry for being vague. Its a green mig welder from Harbor Freight. I forget the actual product name and rating but it's an economy 220V inverter welder from China with enough oomph to burn through 3/16 if I set it up wrong.

I was planning to run er70 0.030 with c25 gas. But also I have 0.025 and 0.035 wire on hand. And some unopened flux core wire. And aluminum wire in this gun-shaped contraption that I once used to turn a broken lawn chair into smoldering garbage. I have a handfull of gas cylinders too, with various different gasses in them, certainly more types of gas than a novice welder would need.

What I really lack is experience and insight. And of course as you indicated, skill. None of that here.

I know every setup is different--just looking for general pointers for welding stuff to the frame. Like wire size, hotter or colder, faster or slower... I know that's like asking what kind of food tastes best, but sometimes even stupid questions get helpful answers here.

Speed (faster or slower) will all depend on how hot the machine is set at. Clean material and being comfortable are both crucial

I always use 030 with 75/25 gas for all mig welding I do. I would only use flux in the field if windy and for a frame I wouldn’t recommend it

Practice practice practice then give it a go

I made my own gates. It was miserable but I could never afford to pay someone. Need to spray some vinegar and water on them to match 54E058C2-B5A2-4E4C-BDD6-F1ACB95196D8.jpg

That’s really neat with the woven sheet metal. Nicely done!

Yes, pics please. Try to recreate your joint as closely as possible with your practice pieces, but doubled over sheet won’t take the same amount of heat that a single piece at double thickness will.

This is exactly what I'm looking to do. Any more details on how you made the panels, what hinges and posts etc?

Don’t remember the exact dimensions of everything but main posts were galvanized and capped, weld on hinges from mcmaster Carr, made the main structure of the gate and put 1” flat stock on top and bottom, and a 45 degree cross strap. Vinyl self tapped in and hit in from the front. Pretty basic but functional

Doing a little tig practice. 3/16 plate with stainless (308L?) filler wire. Going to practice squaring stock with it on the mill next.

Got my weldtables all together. Bought they’re leg kit to make it easy and I’ll admit I’m not crazy about how tall it is but I’ll try it before I cut it up.

Give it some time. You may surprise yourself and find you like the taller table.

Yes, it is higher to lift iron to, but it's less you will have to bend over to do your welding. Don't be in a hurry to cut it lower.

How tall is it? My work bench is 42” I think and I love it. I don’t need to hunch over to work. I’m 6’ tall for reference

I thought the same thing when I first got mine but it’s very comfortable to stand and work. I have my butcher block work table at 36” to sit and tinker at but all my welding is standing (that doesn’t require me to be under a truck).

I’ll measure tomorrow I imagine close to that though.

Thanks for this. Ran out of welding gas so may swing by hf tomorrow and get some of these
