RP-342 cosmoline.

For those of you that have used the rattle cans to undercoat your truck; does this make a mess if used in a garage?
Or should I plan on being outside?

 

I put a tarp underneath and went to town inside my garage. Plan to leave it open and get the fan blowing outside to get rid of the smell. It stinks but works really well.

 

According to this guy on YouTube, you definitely want to do this outside. I just got a case of 9 cans of this stuff, and I'm also planning on getting disposable coveralls for my undercoating job.

2020 TRD Pro in May....I did the RP-342 Black cosmoline first thing. In NE Ohio they use nasty chemicals on our roads and this thin built Taco would be shredded in no time.
I used the black instead of clear to see where the application was going, This stuff does NOT wash off, you need thinner or similar to remove it.
As for attracting dirt/dust...not so much it does have a waxy feel to it though.

I did it outside because of overspray and smell. do not do it on a windy day it gets everywhere. I also would do it on a dirty truck not on a freshly washed truck. I would immediately wash the truck to get off overspray.

LUCKILY.......wifey insisted on a "winter" car so we leased a el cheapo Honda Civic LX....so our Taco is spared the sentence of a slow salt death.

Ya, I was hoping to do it inside so I’m not so dependent on the weather but the last thing I want to do is mess up the garage.

 

I put on my 3m coveralls and goggles, parked the truck in my gravel driveway. Used an old tarp to crawl on after jacking up the truck removing all the tires after putting it on on jack stands. Whatever you get cosmoline on it doesn't come off with soap and water, so do not do this on a garage cement floor unless you have all the concrete covered where your spraying. Imo, the hotter the day the better....less chance of dripping.

 

Cosmoline is the shit.

 

Is that good or bad?

 

For those of you that have used this product in black; is the black tint translucent or opaque?

I happen to be working on this same project this weekend doing my new Tacoma frame. I'm using the CRC brand HD Corrosion Inhibitor, but it seems to be very similar. I would recommend a thinner coat for the initial application on large surface areas like the side of the frame (also not using a spray straw). It won't run like in that video if you go thin on the first coat. Once the first coat dries, the second coat has something "better" to adhere to and seems you can go heavier then. Helps to avoid drips that way.
Doing mine in my garage but wearing eye pro and a disposable respirator to be on the safe side.
The CRC is an amber color. The black color cosmolene sounds interesting!

 

Yep, I checked out the pics. Black product on black frames doesn’t really tell the story but I see your floorboards are pretty dark. Just wanted to double check.

So, you just used the nozzle without the straw? How much product gets suspended in the air? Making a mess?

I‘m also wondering how to apply this on top of the frame rails. There’s not a lot of room to direct the straw to the top. I been wondering if you could glue the end shut on one of the straws and then grind an opening on the diameter to direct the spray 90 degrees from the end.

I'm finishing up today with a second coat and will see the garage floor when I'm done. I don't think enough gets in the air to make a noticeable difference on the garage floor. No doubt some is carried in the air as I can see it in my respirator prefilters, but probably less than aerosol paint. I guess I'll find out soon enough. I honestly did not worry about the tops of my frame rails so I did not take any special efforts to spray them except for in the wheel wells where they were easily accessible and visible, as well. I mainly sprayed the frame only - really wanted to get the welds. I'm not too worried about things like the sway bar, etc.

I'm sure my job won't be perfect but it will be a ton better than doing nothing. My truck is brand new and you can see where the paint has popped off the frame welds in many spots and that drives me nuts. I also have a 2015 Tacoma and I always just used Rustoleum on it. Touch it up once a year. It actually looks amazing and the frame is extremely solid, but the welds are still a little rusty - they just don't show it because of the paint. I'm hoping the CRC/cosmo will prevent the rust from taking off in the first place. Winter's a coming.....

Interesting to me is that my truck build sheet actually shows that it has been rustproofed! I did notice some type of silicone RTV substance (guessing it is silicone - haven't investigated at all) smeared in several locations on the frame that isn't there on my 2015.

 

I just sprayed it at an angle with the straw the best i could for the top of the frame rails. Really couldn't see how effective i got it. Just have to see down the road. At any rate its the welds and insides of the frame that need the attention.
