Hello all. I have a 2020 Trd off-road and after some research I’ve come to the conclusion that I want to re-gear my Tacoma with a 4.88 nitro gear package. I don’t plan on lifting or getting bigger tires and for the most part will keep it stock but from what I’ve found out it’s still a huge best bang for your buck kind of upgrade. I also want to do the OV tune. Does anyone here have this duo? Any advice or knowledge would be appreciated.

If you are staying stock tires, tune first. If you still want more, then do gears and switch to a 4.88 tune

That makes me happy :). So in your opinion is the re-gear and tune a good upgrade?

Your thread caught my attention because I am currently sitting letting the new 5.29s gear cool down as I break them in. I already love how my truck feels with 5.29s and OVtune. Feels less anemic

OVTune has a specific one for 4.88? Which one?

I’m assuming you don’t currently have OVtune? I’m a long time OVtune customer, I say that because he recently changed the way he sells the tunes and I might not be accurate. But I believe when you buy the tune pack you get different tunes. One of which will be designed around the 4.88s

I got mine back in February. So it was OVTune not VFTune back then. I did get the 2.0 version. It came with 4 tunes:

    2.0 Regular 85-89 octane
    2.0 Premium 90-94
    2.0 Super FOB Regular 85-89
    2.0 Super FOB Premium 90-94

Nothing I saw showed specifically for 4.88 gears though. Just different fuel octanes.

Maybe I'm missing something here. What is the stock gearing? 4.88 diffs on stock wheels and tires is going to have the engine singing soprano on the highway, and if you re-tune, go for better gas mileage, because what you're gonna get sucks worse than stock. Now, with big wheels/tires (33's or better), maybe a re-gearing is in order.

If the truck is just a play-toy, go for it, but as a DD it will get old. I can't imagine that low range 4x4 can't be enough with stock gearing unless you do a ton of rock climbing.

The experience I speak from involves the vehicle in my avatar. It had a 4.2 liter straight 6 engine and 4:10 gearing with a 4 speed tranny. Tires were equal to 245/75-15. If you wanted better highway performance (cruising speed), the best option back then was an aftermarket overdrive (that was limited to 2WD only) that gave an effective gearing of about 3:55 and would let you cruise at 65 without sounding like the engine would explode. With the stock gearing 55-60 was about what you could expect at 4K rpm, and that straight-six redlined about 500 rpm less than the 4L V6 does.

Offroad in 4L was a completely different matter, though, the damn thing would climb a tree if the tires could grip it.

The transmission on this truck is a different thing. 4.88 or 5.29s really help you utilize the spread of gears and help keep you in a good gear while cruising. There a ton YouTube videos and a giant thread on here somewhere that go over the 3rd gen Tacoma and why a lot of people end up going with 5.29s

The MT does not have gear specific tunes. It’s an auto thing for shift points

4.88 in the AT is very close to what the MT runs. 2450 rpm at 70 mph. I average 20-22 mpg.

it’s not near what you’d expect. The AT is under geared from Toyota. 4.88 on stock tires is a great combo. 5.29 on 33s or bigger.

Yeah you are missing alot of things. We are talking about the 3.5 v6 with most power starting at 3k rpm and up. I find 5th gear freeway driving to be the best.
