Hmmm. So the expiration really does matter? I thought it was more a liability type thing.

    it does

soft armor can break down and be less effective depending on age, light, sweat, heat etc

Even storing soft armor by hanging it up can cause it to be less effective and it should always be stored flat, dry, and out of sunlight

Any useful purpose outside using for target practice? I have my steel plates i could shoot also.

Edit. I guess it could work as a backer for the steel or hesco plates. Or I could do a second hand out type vest.

Edit. Edit. Do Kevlar PASGT helmets have the same kinda shelf life?

    Not sure on helmets

I keep old soft panels around because they can still work as padding for rifle plates but offer no realistic ballistic protection

FYI woven 100% Kevlar aramid panels that have not been heavily abused have been found to still stop their rated threats years past their "expiration" dates. The laminate based panels are the ones that tend to really degrade with age. That said your Model Y vest is better off as a collectors item. You can buy a brand new II or IIIA vest for $400-ish.

PASGT helmets as long as they are not cracked or starting to delaminate should be fine. Though they were never designed to stop pistol rounds they tend to at least stop II threats. They seem to have the most issue with .44 mag during tests. So most end up being just shy of "IIIA". But again you can buy new production PASGT shape shells (with ACH style suspensions) for $300-400...and they are IIIA rated.

What are y’all thoughts on an Aero AR pistol chambered in 556 and 223? I’m sure this has been part of the discussion at one point or another. 7.5” barrel

Thoughts are that it is cool looking but impractical and a little annoying. If you ever shot a SBR in a vehicle or been in a hallway with rifles being shot by your face then you know what I mean. AR’s in variances of the .223 don’t do well as far as the numbers are concern in terminal performance when under 10in barrel. It’s a long technical conversation with caveats but even the 10.31 barrels like the Mk18’s aren’t a great “all around” rifle. It’s more of a good in a bedroom rifle. Ballistically speaking.

All that out of the way, if you want one for just to have one, or to generally plink....then cool. Just know it won’t go as fast or as far as 10, 14 or 16+ barrel. Aero is a cool company.

I was mainly concerned of barrel length. From what I’ve read 14” is preferred

14 and 14 suppressed is probably the minimum I’d go if I cared about wounding effects at conventional combat distances or about 500m in but still wanted something that worked in small spaces.

That was also another thing I was wondering was about aero. There are a lot of those being sold locally right now

365XL base plates came in today from Armory Craft. Not a big buy, but definitely feels better. Such a small pistol, gonna head out to the range sometime this week and get a few rounds through it with both base plates to see if there is a noticeable difference.
