RP-342 cosmoline.

I noticed some greasy silverly crap on one part of the underside of my frame when new, but it washed off after driving in a couple rain storms...otherwise just a heavy black chassis paint that was thicker than my old tundra. Dealer said nothing about them doing rustproofing....only that they gave me a shops name that does it.

 

Zoo truck - where was your truck purchased? Mine was in Ohio - rust belt, so perhaps due to the dealer destination it received actual frame rustproofing? Maybe.................

 

Boston....doesn't get must rustier in that region. To be honest i didn't notice any extra rustproofing from the manufacture, especially on many parts of the chassis where you could definitely tell it was just black paint. This frame is pretty wimpy imo compared to my 2001 tundra which wasn't a much heavier truck, any amount of rust proofing will go along way.

 

Ya, it’s amazing how quickly the rust starts.

I dropped my spare tire last night in preparation of starting this project and then crawled under the truck with a creeper and trouble light to look around. I noticed there was already rust starting around the perimeter of the weld beads on the rear end! Now my truck has 600 miles on it, has never been wet (by me anyways), and is always in the garage!

Thats pretty strong for a 2020

Thats premature for a 2020 unless it sat somewhere on the lot a long time before you got it to start showing rust, or a southern vehicle?. My truck had zero surface rust when nearly no miles, and still has no rust anywhere at 4k miles being a vehicle ordered. I drove my truck in the rain a number of times before rustproofing it. As fas as the real root of the rust issue, its the sodium chloride deicing sprays and rock salt used continuously on our roads here during winter that will literally dissolve cars like a kia in few years.

 

Nope, it was built and shipped directly to my dealer after waiting for 8 months.

It appears to be at the base of the welds from a lack of paint. Just good old fashion sloppy, bad work.

 

Wow, that looks like that rear end housing sat where it was damp for a year. I had the dealer specifically order my truck from texas which took about 8 weeks to build, and looks totally different with a heavy coat of really black paint making it look like it was just manufactured....the entire chassis was that way. Btw, why did your truck take so long to get to the dealer?

 

It only took two weeks to get from the Mexican factory to my dealer.
It took them 8 months to build it once I put down a deposit because of the shutdown.

 

I think the posted picture is typical from what I've seen. Not really sure that is rust as it might be the coloration of the weld metal. Regardless, it is bare metal and will rust eventually if it isn't rusty already. Hate to see it on a new truck! I just finished my CRC HD application and I like how it looks really. Still have to clean up the garage, but I can see my chrome fan, which I was using as an exhaust fan, has a nice amber tint to it now.................I guess it won't rust.........

 

I guess that explains it as far as the time line. I ordered my truck in january, just after new years, and got it after the first week of march. No excuse for the crappy paint job though. I don't like to rag on mexico built products, but i had my share of quality control issues with their people that our plant was having back in the late 80's, and early 90's with having our remanufactured electronic circuit boards down there.

 

Mine looked pretty similar to the posted picture and mine was noted as "final assembly in Texas" - one of the reasons I bought it. I guess who knows where everything took place prior to the final assembly or where the parts came from. But to be honest, I've seen a LOT of Tacomas like that going back to the 2nd Gen. Like new, but rusty welds on the frames.

 

I believe the rear axles are made in Thailand.

Oh well, this is the worse it's ever gonna look cause I'm ordering the RP-342 tonight and plan on starting on it as soon as it arrives.
I just drove all over town trying to find a painting respirator with no luck. I guess I'll need to go to Amazon.

 

If you do the job outside a respirator really isn't needed. I don't think i'd want to work with this stuff inside anyways. You'll stink up your garage and possibly your house if part of it. I've seen guys here just used a cheap rain jacket and pants spraying this stuff on with no mask/goggles just a baseball cap. They claim it isn't all that bad.

 

Picked up some of this from ace wonder if it’s worth trying out or just going with cosmoline

 

Looks and sounds good. I just wouldn't mix, and match this stuff with any others....use one or the other. Months ago i looked at the reviews on many of these rust inhibitors, which many seemed similar before settling on cosmoline...only cause the price was good at the time. Don't know if this corrosion x is any better, or that it sells for the same price. Sometimes price isn't everything.

 

I have been using AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector for years. Seems to be close to this product. Sprays on thin, very runny but dries in like a wax form. Spray it on everything underneath. I love it.

 

Kind of sounds like the LPS3 rust inhibitor i used on my boat when a moored it at the shore. It'd go on like a thin oil and setup like a soft waxy feel. It was great on all electrical connectors.

 

Well THAT was a nasty ass job!

After using (5) cans while crawling underneath I pulled the tires and shot it from that direction too. Almost (7) cans total.

 

Nice looking truck and now you shouldn’t have to worry about frame rust! And from the pictures I’m guessing most of your face won’t rust either!
