I want to install a back up camera and radio unit that is oem with just plugging the stock stereo speaker wires to the new radio that has the backup screen. I know I can get one of those backup camera tailgate handles and run the wire into the back of the radio.
What products are out there like this that are very easy to install for a novice?

I'm interested in this as well. The knobs on the stock radio are junk and barely work, and the aux input has some serious loss. Something confirmed as a direct replacement without much hassle would be great.

Try the Excelon line from Kenwood, I bought at Crutchfield- was easy to install with supplied harness and install kit.

I just googled it. Apparently you can use the stereo to check your Facebook and text while driving, all while avoiding the cell phone laws. If I could get CNN on it that would be cool. The news paper is always flying around and blocking my view while commuting.

EDIT: That Crutchfield website is awesome, thanks for the tip!

Been using crutchfield for years. Although pricing may not be cheapest in some cases, they include all necessary harnesses and fitment kits plus have pretty detailed instructions which makes installation a breeze.

I will also vouch for Crutchfield. I had a question about a wiring harness on my wife's Honda and they were super knowledgeable on the phone.

    Thread Revival.

I just installed the factory OEM camera and display mirror from a 2010 Tacoma into my 2006 with minimal effort and it works perfect with everything including the compass and interior lighting.

I found a wrecked 2010 Tacoma at a wreckers yard and offered $150 for the factory display mirror and tailgate handle with camera. I grabbed the wire harness from the mirror to the main panel by the drivers knee area and it included the trailer backup accessory wires which I cut off 12” after the connections. I would have grabbed all the harness to the rear of the truck but I could only grab so much as the truck was sitting on rims and I couldn’t get too far underneath.

I grabbed the tailgate handle with camera and cut the factory wiring as far back as I could reach under the spare.

I installed the tailgate handle and spliced cat6 wire to the four wires from the factory harness and ran this wire to the cab following the existing rear lighting wire harness. I then spliced on the cat6 wires to the four wires from the factory backup camera harness at the drivers side knee fuse panel. I spliced the red reverse wire and connected it to the red wire of the backup camera harness (Lots of threads on this red Reverse wire) and then I plugged in the new large connector into the fuse panel and ran the wiring up the the mirror and interior lights. I hooked it up and everything works perfect.

I now have the factory backup display mirror in my 2006 with about three hours of total tear down and rebuild.

I will add some pictures for those owners of 2005-2008 Tacoma owners that may tackle this mod if they can find a 2009-2011 truck at a salvage yard. I believe in 2012 the wiring harness changed with the model update that year.

If I could have grabbed the whole harness it would have been plug and play with the exception of the one splice into the Red reverse wire.

I’m doing something similar. I have a 2007 with newer OEM head unit and was the easiest plug and play upgrade I’ve done in a long time. I just got a replacement tailgate with OEM camera and need the harness that runs from the tailgate to the head unit. Pics of the plug At the radio end or any other details would be greatly appreciated!

Great idea on the CAT6! I did a factory OEM tailgate camera on my 2005 as well, but made a wiring harness from spare parts I had in the garage and tucked it underneath the truck into the cab.

In case this helps others, this thread by tillithz was super helpful 2013 reverse camera to non-jbl dash display

The 05'-08's did not come with factory tailgate cameras. The one you have is an aftermarket one that the PO installed. You can buy a tailgate handle and add an aftermarket camera to hook up to an aftermarket radio. Keep in mind that the OEM camera is 6 volts so installing one from another tacoma is not as easy as buying an aftermarket 12v one.
