Does anyone know of any suppliers of solid 1st gen bed racks that will support a hard shell roof top tent? All of the bed rack suppliers I've looked at seem to have only 2nd gen and 3rd gen racks.

One option I'm considering is a removable rack like the Thule Xporter or the Rola Pick-Up-Rack, but I'm concerned they won't hold a 200 lb. RTT like the Alu-Cab while doing heavy off-roading. Any real world experience with this type of setup would be greatly appreciated.

You want a low profile rack, mid height or cab height?

    ^^^ this.

My rack is great if you want low/mid profile, to keep stuff behind the cab, but with a hard shell, you might be looking at above-the-cab. More info on my rack (which I also offer as a DIY kit, which is nice for shipping if you can weld/find someone to weld for you) is here. Several TWers running it now, seeming to like it.

PM if you have any questions @RangeRick

Cab height, since I'm considering an Alu-Cab or similar HOWEVER I don't get why I can't just get a mid height and have the RTT butt up against the cab and hang out over the tailgate a half foot. Not like it's going to mess up the departure angle.

I was just at the Wheeler's warehouse in Fresno a week or so ago, and there was a double cab in the parking lot like that.

Totally doable, it just sucks if you park in a garage, and you are pretty much guaranteed to smack your forehead on it every single time you walk around the back, lol

Ha. Hadn't thought of that. Also, one of the RRTs I'm looking at is 90" long, so that's at least a 16-18" overhang depending on the space needed for the hinges and raised front roof edge.

    Thanks for the recommendations.

I sold the Flippac in June. Forgot I had the photo on here.

The long version if you’re interested is that I’m waiting on a Vagabond Drifter that I thought would be here in August. I put my Flippac up for sale in June expecting it would take a while to sell but I got my price in a week. Now it looks like the Drifter won’t be be here until December or January, so I’m kicking myself for selling the Flippac and trying to talk myself into an interim solution.

Yes I have one of those. I like to move location each day, explore and then stop for the night, dispersed camping. Hassle to set up and pack up each day. I also like to lock my stuff up when I’m away from the vehicle. But yeah those tidy campgrounds are nice and the noise of those generators is so peaceful LOL. Actually going tent camping next week.
