Happened to check oil in 2015 Tacoma, was 2 quarts low, seems serpentine belt was coming apart, part of it hit base base of oil filter, broke seal & caused oil leakage, just tankful that I checked it when I did.

    Welcome to TW.
If you had checked the belt and got to it before it came apart, there wouldn't be the oil problem:notsure:
Checking the oil only told you it was low and a possible leak..

I find it really hard to believe that the shredded belt caused the oil filter to leak. More likely it took out the front crank seal and splattered oil on the filter.

Front crank seal possibly damaged? Or was leaking onto the belt causing the damage ?? Seen this a couple times

I have seen German cars suck serp belts through a (crank?) seal a few times; not sure why they did it.

I am guessing Toyota did not put an oil level sensor into these trucks then.
Normally, cars (some since '04) have a sensor where if the oil is low, it causes a yellow warning indicator lit up that looks like an oiler tool.

If so, as usual, Toyota is 10 years late to everything
and does not seem to think having motor oil in the engine to lubricate it must be very important then

Check the oil, tire pressure every time I take on fuel.

When the hood is open, a visual check of everything only takes a few seconds.

Was that back when gas station were full service? You buy a tank of gas, get oil checked and an HJ on the house.

Today's gas stations are really sad places.

Self-serve at the pump, then hope a receipt comes out. If no receipt, then you hike into the snack store, stand in line, ask Mr. Pimple or Mr. Geezer for a receipt.

Kinda defeats the purpose of self-serve................

I hate the CC machines at the pumps. It's like 21 questions just to start pumping. Is this a CC or debit card, what's your zip, do you have a rewards card, do you want a car wash, do you want a receipt, what octane would you like....sorry I didn't get that please start over. Half the time it doesn't read my card correctly or the keypad sucks and missed a number as I typed it, so I have to wait 3 minutes for it to cancel the transaction and start over.

I forgot about the interrogation and semi-functioning keypad.

    On the other hand......

I do get a perverse joy when I need to visit the inside. I like screwing with the knucklehead behind the counter.

Why have self-serve pumps, if I have to ask you for a receipt and pump the fuel and handle the payment?
Is my gas free because I need to do all the work for you to turn on the pump so I can fill my tank?

Yep, Toyota cares so little they designed a 4.0 that barely ever leaks oil.

All those fancy german cars with oil level sensors need them because they're always burning oil and leaking oil.

The best way to get service is to show up right before they open and then instead of going through the service lane, go through the front window.
