To flat tow a vehicle, its best to remove the drive shaft(s) or at least have a transfer case that can be put into neutral so the transmission isn't turning for all of those miles. AFAIK, these things aren't practical on a Subaru like the OPs.

Using a trailer (with trailer brakes) is much better on both the vehicle being towed and the vehicle doing the towing.

U will have added weight in the bed of Ur Taco !!

if U have a healthy V6 U will be ok

that U rally Ur expectations when it comes to acceleration & speed

    U will be disappointed ...............

if U are reasonable ......conservative & have a balanced perspective U will be ok

load up mainly considering tongue weight & a huge concern for stopping distances

no less U can NOT experience ' drop offs ' on the shoulder o the road

    on Ur very 1st haul

stop at a CAT Scale & get a certified weigh.................U will be surprised !!

lol yup, those are kilograms , so 12650 lbs for the truck and trailer. 2016 TRD sport longbox. Not saying you should do it, but saying this is what we did over 8 days.

I cannot flat tow this thing, it needs to be off the road altogether. It will DESTROY the diff. The curse of AWD.

If you try to rent a uhaul check with the dealer first. I rented a trailer to tow my Hudson, but when I got there I was told they wouldn't rent that trailer to my Tacoma because it could "burn out your transmission or something". A dealer down the road rented to me tho.

I towed my E30 BMW race car for five seasons with my Gen2 with no problems. Used a steel tilt type dual axel open trailer. Car weighed 2700 lbs. plus spare tires tools gas etc. I'll just say that the towing part wasn't the most fun of any weekend. Trailer brakes for sure and as long as you understand that you and your truck are only one part of the package you should be good. You aren't as much 'towing' as you are along for the ride. Eyes way ahead at freeway speeds and hope nothing happens in front of you. It's doable.

I was referring to the 5.13 ratio from your comment. I thought there is only 4.88 or 5.29s

im not sure what tracks U get around to.................

    how far & conditions

changing diff gears is expensive to use occasionally

then running ' John Deere ' gears when U dont need em

4th gear on the 5 or 6 speed trans will see U thru towing

then when regular driving revert back to full get along

You’ll be fine towing, just watch taking off on hills with the MT. I try to avoid steep inclines or plan a route around them. If I get into a situation of taking off from dead stop on a steep hill I’ll throw it in 4 low temporarily.

Get yourself a good trailer brake controller. Around here you can find a cheaper used dual axle car hauler for around $2k or so. If clearance on the Subaru is an issue you could get a tilt deck.

You could save the wear/tear on the Taco and rent a UHaul every time...

When you rent a Uhaul vehicle (not a trailer, but something with an engine) they charge by the mile... doing track events using this method would get expensive quickly.

I wish these things came with the rollback hold feature. I don't mind riding the handbrake on the hills in SF but my Focus RS I had before this had the hill-hold and it was really helpful. If I am towing bet your ass I'm not going to do it anywhere near hills in the city...

Is your Rally Car an auto?

    I mean, I understand exploding diffs and shear, and the 4EAT, I've got to pull fuses if I ever get a flat with our Forester;

But if your STI is manual and you dial back your DCCD you can flat tow it. I'm sure you can find the same threads on NASIOC that I see..
