Have you ever run pure MTs or do you usually stick to a more AT tread?

The STT Pros look nice on my camper, and I'd use them, but not available in my size.

I know Mr. mohawk runs the Toyo MTs and didn't have any complaints.

 

Odd question but since you mentioned ground wasps....
I was at the cabin on Saturday and found a large hole in the ground, maybe a foot long oval. I thought it might be a burrow. Inside was the remains of a bees' nest but I have never seen what the ground bees build. I should have taken a pic but it looked like a typical honey comb but in a hole in the ground.
Is that a ground bee cave-in or did something drag a bees nest into a burrow?

ran into one years ago.threw some gas on it and lit it up. Came back a little while later first two lyers burned,Many more layers below were alive and well. BE CAREFUL

 

ground wasps are usually very active and very aggressive, if you threaten the nest they will attack and follow you. My dogs have found 3 this year on my property. Look into the foaming bee spray, and do it at night

 

I found a nest when I was pounding in a potato stake when setting up a canvas wall tent in WY. High-tailed it out of the area for a while.

 

Many years ago, when I was racing in the PHA, we set-up a tent on top of one! Thankfully it had a floor but we had to run away and take it down/move at night!

 

This was odd because it was such a large hole, like a cave-in from all the rain maybe. I gave it a wide margin but you are right, I will take some spray up there next weekend.

 

This time of year they get dug up by bear, skunk, raccoon, badger, opossum, or whatever foragers you happen to have. Just like a paper wasp nest, but in the ground.

 

If it drops into the 40's for several hours they really slow down. That's when the foragers will dig them up. It helps if the nest is in the shade so they don't warm from the sun. The last nest that got me was next to a Lilac tree. I parked a running lawnmower with a full tank of gas over it for about an hour, then set a 5 gallon bucket full of bricks on top of the 1 inch hole for a week. The mower got quite a few, and the bucket reminded me where they were while blocking the entrance. Didn't want to kill the tree by dumping anything down the hole.

Those are hornets - I hit a nest walking behind my field mower a few years ago. A cloud of dust went up...followed by a cloud of angry hornets. As was mentioned, bears and skunks will dig them up and eat the comb. Skunks like to eat the hornets/bees, too. If they get into an apiary they will hit the hive to get the bees to come out and then eat the bodies.

If you wait until dusk, they all return to the hive - and you can use a foaming spray to get down into it to kill them.

 

Very true Murph. Last year around this time my Dad and I found a nest about 15 yards from his ladder stand that was dug up by what we think was a bear. It appears the bees started nailing him because a tree beside the nest was all skinned up with claw marks over six feet up. I have pictures somewhere I will try and find. This type of bee is a smaller yellow jacket but meaner than all get out. My Brother spent a night in the hospital after we got into them years back. Never want to experience that again!
