Supposed the be getting triple digit heat this week. Good thing I winterized. I Guess I changed the air filter just in time.

 

Good morning folks. Slept in late until 6:30 because the grand dog went home Sunday afternoon. Missed my morning walk, but he is where he belongs. Have a good day and be safe.

 

Went to a yard sale on Saturday and picked up a 375 LB rater 8 ft step ladder for $30 and a large tarp for $5. Mounted the ladder on my ladder stand on the side of the house and the tarp covered the ladders. One of the ladders is a 28 ft extension ladder. Also removed two mor landscaping timbers, graded the area and put down grass seed. All the outdoor projects are now complete till spring.

 

Good morning all, what a wild last 14 hours. Our pressure tank (well) failed yesterday at 1800 so we have been without water and heat ever since. Woke to the house being 54 degrees, started a fire in the wood stove then walked and fed the dogs. Waiting on a service call

 

My son was looking to put a "heatilator"(?) setup in his fireplace with a 12v fan. Uses a small battery charger to run the blower when the 110v AC power is on - and a vehicle battery for the emergency power. Seems like a useful addition to the house - they get ice storms (Oklahoma) and tree damage that can take a day or so to sort out. The one he found wasn't exactly cheap but could keep the house from freezing up.

 

Our stand alone wood stove heats the whole house - lucky in that respect. The house has 8" insulated walls, kind of a hybrid A frame with in floor radiant heat. Having the tank fail we had to shut off the well pump which cut out the boiler call for heating over night. We closed all the windows to keep what temp the house had (64 degrees).

 

Those heated slab floors really work well don't they? One of my past employers built a new weld shop in Gillette, Wy and it has that sort of heating. When we were in the stage of planning it we went over to Nebraska to look at a (ahem) hog barn that had that system being installed. The piping is really tough stuff. The owner of the system under construction, showed me his "anti-freeze" preparation - which was a vertical trench around the perimeter of the slab, right down to the frost line or below. It had a vertical panel of foam insulation buried in there that was intended to keep the earth below the slab coupled to the deeper earth temp. I'm sure it works, very clever - and a permanent, non-degradeable advantage to the barn.

Did you use the "ground coupling" arrangement with yours?

 

Whole house generator. Expensive but my choice came down, initially, to generator or solar. With a less than $100 a month electrical bill I went generator.

The system is completely automatic including regular testing.

 

The house is built with a basement so each floor (2) has radiant piping and insulated separately. This is an old photo - roof is now metal and we have a patio with retaining wall to the right, this does not show the detached garage - large with shop.

An embarrassment to our political process. Did you learn anything you did not know before the debate? To me, if you are trying to decide who to vote for, this debate did nothing to help you make a decision.

Learned nothing at all Tom, it was interesting to watch though!!!!! I do think that at the next one they should put them each in a closed glass chamber and shut off the outgoing sound for the one who is not answering the question, naw, then it would be boring!!!!
They could then give them a 15min. free for all back and fourth based on notes on what the other said and anything else they wanted to bring up.

 

We have radiant heat in the concrete floor in the basement as well as in lightweight concrete on the main floor. There are two guest rooms and a bathroom on the upper front of the house - we put radiant baseboard heat upstairs. Love it.

Both nice houses guys, one thing I like about any abode is some property with it for privacy.

 

Yeah Heatilator. Fireplace without an insert and heatilator isn't very efficient I seldom use mine because of that.

Got a heatilator and gutted the motor to use as a heat exchange for the freestanding wood stove in my tent.





Once I turned 60, even a little before that, said the heck with that noise and rent a cabin instead. Did sleep in the back of the truck at 59 once, that was enough.



Leave Sunday morning with the dogs to hunt grouse most of the month of October in a cabin 2.5 miles from the Canadian border on the edge of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Indoor running water that you don't have to heat to make it run and a sit down crapper. And thermostat to control heat. Woodstove if I feel the need. Life is good and about to get even better soon.

 

My kid's place in OK was built in '54 - not exactly to modern standards (almost as old as me). We replaced all of the windows (were single pane), put storm doors on it, and had the attic insulation "re-blown". It has a nearly new roof - but absolutely horrible wiring. It's what he can afford and I help him with the big bumps.....

We had our 99th day over 100º yesterday here in Tucson - the next one breaks the record.
