Installing Dual Fast Charge USB Ports where wireless charge button is

Has anyone done anything like this? My plan is to remove the pointless wireless charging button, and pop in this:

Ideally, I would be running it on a separate circuit to the fuse panel, but it looks like it will plug and play off of the cigarette adapter's power. I am short on time, so this is going to be my solution until I get back from a road trip.

That wireless charging system always seems to overheat and stop working, and it is at a trickle charge rate compared to plugging it in.

 

I did exactly this on my center console a few weeks ago. I used add a fuse and connected them to my wiper fluid with an additional 5 amp fuse. I think the wiper fluid is 5 amps. I do recommend getting some extra wire length from a hardware store to give it SOME slack plus some shrink tubing.

My iphone only gets the 1 amp since it's not the Apple charging cube charging it which is dumb.

 

Hey that looks pretty cool. Might have to get one of these.. I'm not sure what Toyota was thinking when they put USB charging ports in the bottom of the utility box on the center console. It's nice they put the ports in 'factory', but man, they couldn't have picked a more PITA spot to put them in.. I like stuff like this on the dash..

 

I used one briefly in my camper before switching to a different style. It sucks that Amazon doesn't have a plain-jane model of these, they seem to think that everyone wants to throw a disco party in their usb ports. Its a small pain to take a brand new one apart just so I could clip those stupid led lights and sand/clean the faceplate, but it was worth the result.

 

Just hook it to the 12v/lighter socket wiring and call it a day. It is a fool proof circuit, and is much better to tie into than something that you might overload or agitate sensitive factory electronics. If only that power socket had blue LED's then it would be perfect. I think that the green illumination color would not go well with my OCD.....

 

I know, right! I chose this because it had the dimmest lights out of all of them.

 

What are your thoughts on having it hooked to the cigarette lighter, and then having all connections feeding at the same time? I’m worried this will overload it possibly, and in that case then fuse will blow. Not sure though because I’m not good on doing the math and usually go conservative. This is why I would eventually run a dedicated circuit.

 

Each cigarette lighter is fused at 15 amps, if I remember correctly. If you connected 4 phones that would draw about 13 amps. I'm actually tempted to do this now, probably relocate my rear window switch. If and when I do it, I'll probably pull the center console and tap into that useless power outlet there, just so there is an even load between the two fuses.

 

if it was me- id spend the extra few min to run this directly to the battery. Its super simple. Having an "always hot" charger is invaluable especially when camping. Or in daily life when you run in to store with vehicle off- phone still charges, etc etc. Worth its weight in gold to have it as an option IMO for almost no more work and a few bucks in wire and ring connectors.

 

LOL!!!!! I know what you mean. I put a new Kenwood stereo in my van last year. Apparently they think I want a light-show like a Pink Floyd concert.. LOL!
The less stuff lit up on the dash the better ... Although, I could understand a very slight glow (Very slight) from the USB ports just so if it's night/dark and you're not trying to stab a USB plug in blind. But ya, I don't need the glow from USB plugs lighting up the whole cab..

 

You will be fine with that. Most people never come close to the capacity of that circuit unless they are plugging in a handheld spot beam or inverter into that socket.

15A is typical for that circuit. I would bet that 4 phones would be much less than 13 amps worth of draw. If you know your way around a multimeter, you can test the actual draw yourself.

This looks good - where do those white plugs connect to? There is an Amazon review that says it hooked up perfectly in an 18 Tacoma which is what I have. Is there a matching plug associated with the cigarette lighter wiring? And which cigarette lighter are we talking about - the one in the console, or the one on the dash? Thanks.

 

It should be plug and play into the cig plug wires. I’m about to dive in, and I will post the pics of what I’m doing to get it installed for you.

 

i have to agree with everyone here.. Tapping into the cig lighter for USB outputs would not worry me in the slightest.
They only things I've ever installed where I thought I needed a dedicated separate circuit was:
Inverter: Put a 1000w inverter in my van ... Ran 6 gauge wires right to the battery..
Off Road Lights: Various rigs - ran thru 30 amp relays, connected to the battery..
Snow Plow: Current plow rig, ran thru 100 amp relay, 2 gauge wiring (Except for the joy-stick/On-Off controls)..
Stereo power amps: Various rigs.. Connected to the battery
Electric Fan: Installed on a 79' PowerWagon .. Connected to battery ..Ran thru 30 amp relay, controlled buy a 180* sensor in the water jacket in the intake manifold, but also added a manual on/off switch on the dash..

 

Well it’s not plug and play!! But it fits. I snipped the ends of the power off of the wireless function and tapped into that.

 

Sorry, don't understand what you mean. Maybe it's self explanatory. I assumed because it came with clip ends that there were clips ready in the harness for them. Also not sure if we're talking about the cig lighter in the dash or in the console.

 

I’m trying to get on the road to get to a big project, and I’m standing in line at the post office sneaking in a moment to give some info and post some pictures. Excuse the quick sloppy post.

My truck is a 2018 Double Cab 4x4 TRD Off Road Manual trans with leather and a couple extra TRD pro features. The wireless charging is by the cigarette adapter by the middle console buttons.

Look at YouTube for taking it apart, there are a couple good videos. You just have to take off the glove box and passenger airbag, so disconnect the ground on your battery!! Once you get those off, you will have enough access to do this mod.


the side access above is where you stick your hand in to pop out the switch.


I popped this button out, and used the power from this option because I didn’t want to tear more of my dashboard out and had limited time. The power this has is dedicated for charging, and should be fine.



The black adapter is the wireless, and the white adapter is the cigarette lighter power. I took the cigarette one out to see which was best to use. It was cramped quarters, and chose the wireless black connector’s power.

The last wire with a white stripe is the ground on that black connector. The solid wire next to that is the positive wire. Snip those wires closest to the connector to have the most to use. I then snipped the useless connector which came on the usb plugs, and butt connected everything. I will try and post a video I made on here at some point.



The area you are working in is a common modification area. I was able to take my center console out at the same time and do the 400w anytime mod, and I also routed my CB antenna. Do this is the trifecta mod. You can do it all at once. That will be a different post.

BTW I left the post office but wanted to finish so I spent 10 extra minutes!
