No bugles for closing weekend...bumped a big bull and cows bedded only 35yds from me like a dummy while stalking a thick creek-bed in the afternoon - no shot, just sadness.

Consolation sunset was a beaut though:

They weren’t talking or responding to calls in Montana for the last two weeks. Made it tough to locate them without busting them out of bedding areas. Two occasions we came across the same 5x5 at about 100-120 but with the wind swirling like it was, he caught us both times.

I feel your pain, especially when you're on the same one more than once. You have to pry bugles out of the roosevelts on the coast, so I went back to the east side since they were bugling like crazy the weekend before but tight lipped this time. Still cool to be that close but all the more painful to watch them take off lol.

Found a herd of 42 climbing up that far ridge and into private before I could make a move.

Yea apparently when hunting pressure mounts (in the area we were hunting) the majority of the herd moves across the mountain to private land where they farm alfalfa grass. Once they left, there was one small herd of 6 with one 5x5 and a spike floating around too. Never got a shot, or even close. Busted a couple out of bedding areas but also never saw them, just heard them take off.

Bulls were quiet in Northern Colorado this archery season, too. I was hunting muley and came up empty handed. Not sure how the fires impacted your hunt, but they were tough over here this year (at least in my units) . Looking forward to Elk rifle in less than 2 wks :fingerscrossed:

Bummer but good luck in elk! Fires were in units I don't hunt but impacted mine in that they entirely closed forest access for a while so I was hunting new country - was still breathing in thick smoke so wore an N95 under my gaiter.

Yes sir. I'll be in North Park on private this year. Bull and cow tags in my pocket. So help me god if I don't fill the freezer...

Haven't been to flat tops in a bit, but beat feet around Sleepy Cat mtn a time or two. Best of luck!

Not bad! I’m wrapping up my plan to go, I might hunt near sleepy cat but it seems to have too much pressure to commit to that spot.

My buddy and I went to 2 of our leases today to check cameras. Then we put up 2 tower blinds for another friend of ours, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma earlier this year. With all of the chemotherapy and radiation treatments he’s been through it’s left him pretty weak. It always feels good to help someone out when you know they need it.B1AAD0A6-92E9-4275-A0B0-8CD3E6F4F313.jpg315EC979-F959-4C7F-A1BC-01D7FEDD36EF.jpg
