Non-existent dealer service first time around?

Just log your service work at toyota.com in the Owners section. Reporting service work to CarFax is utter BS, in my opinion. While it may help buyers, it also raises more questions.

 

First service is just tire rotation and check things . Oil change not due till the second service . I would look into a new dealership that actually gives a rats ass about there customers .

I blame BMW for the 10K oil change trend.

Every new car manufacturer recommended 5K until BMW included "free" oil service with the included 48mo warranty and maintenance. Then magically 10K was a good interval. Notice the only difference was who was paying for the oil service.

 

Can't imagine a document like the owners manual would deceive anyone on their maintenance schedule. It even warns you about heavy usage or extraordinary conditions that may need you to replace things sooner. 10K is definitely safe if your every day drive isn't hours at a time.

 

Use royal purple and it won't ever turn black.

 

Mines black at 5k as well. I drive an hour to work and back home every day though.

 

I have two examples there.

P2 Volvo OMs from 2001 to 2005 reported the use of ATF in the PS system. That was the fluid used on the previous gen. For that new gen, it was actually Pentosin, which I already had on the shelf and is only compatible with itself. Not long after discovering the error, even with a few flushes, the rack cracked. I found a similar report on the interwebs after getting it swapped out at a massive cost.

2014 Forester XTs. The OCI is 7,500mi and uses six freaking quarts in a 2.0l engine. The VVT system is particularly sensitive to oil contaminates and will ring up $2k repairs due to that contamination. We recently learned that 2015s throttled that back 6k, which some feel is even sporty. Our trap was that the dealer gave us a killer deal on 60k worth of maint and did a good job when doing it, except that it was hard to schedule and we would go over the OCI by 500mi or so waiting to get in. Thankfully there was goodwill on the repairs.

 

Weird. I have a 14.5mi commute and it looks almost fresh until about 9k? Still, it seems to be clearer than other vehicles that we have owned.

 

Well, I'm generating a tremendous amount of heat on my drive burning the oil of course. Been doing my changes every 5k and shes purring. If this was my old corolla, I would probably wait the 10k or maybe just before, light vehicle with a 4 banger won't bother the oil as much.

 

You know your vehicle best, but typically highway miles are much easier on components?

 

My drive isn't generally on flat terrain unfortunately, I quite literally drive uphill both ways. I'm basically accelerating the whole way.

It is funny that in my hometown, I lived on one hill and our schools were on another. That makes for a good and joke that is certain to get dad-joke level eye rolls from the fam.

 

I used it in my ranger for a while there, still turned black after about 3-4k miles. Then i switched to lucas. It was all the same seemed like. I also did my oil changes sooner than the manual suggested. The engine ran great. One mechanic even comnented how smooth it idled for 220k km.

I think a LOT of it has to do with what dealer, you're dealing with.
When I decided on buying a Taco, and knew I had to order what I wanted, cuz none of the local dealers had any sitting on the lot... The 3 closest dealers to me (Spokane WA. & Coeur d'Alene ID.) had absolutely ZERO interest in even trying to order what I wanted. They wanted to sell me what they already had (Which wasn't much) and what they had were the top-tier expensive ones, which I didn't want, nor could afford.
I finally found a dealer in Kalispell Montana, that was more than willing (And bent over backwards) to get me what i wanted.
It was a 4 hour drive each way, but they were awesome to work with. They really went the Extra Mile so far as customer service.
Anyway .. When it comes time to service my rig, (I'm at 1400 miles right now) they told me I can go to any Toyota dealer and get it done. (Free oil/filter change .. Tire rotation .. etc.) Even where I'm at, that's still a 3 hour round trip (Spokane) .. And probably a lot of waiting in between ...
I'm thinking, do I really wanna trust/wait for a dealer to do everything, and do it correctly, if they had NO interest in selling me a truck in the first place? Are they gonna fuss over my brand-new truck the way I'D fuss over it?
I'm of the mindset of doing the oil/filter changes myself. (And probably more frequent than 10K miles.. But that's a 'me' thing..)
I know the dealer is 'free', but If I can change my own oil/filter myself in less than an hour .. How 'free' is 'free' if I have to spend almost all day sitting at the dealer? (I may be retired, but time still = $$)

 

Find a new, better dealer. I had aftermarket wheels and tires on mine. They came and asked me where my lug lock was to rotate them. I told them not to worry about it since they were just put on. Also made doubly sure I didn't want the wash when I went back to the desk to pick it up.
