Especially with 14klbs of momentum behind it. I've had it happen before with lighter loads or at lower speeds, and usually just lifting off the throttle and coasting is enough to correct it. This was the first time I've had to actually use the brake controller to get out of it.

 

What'd you do, just tap the brake controller or were you beyond that?

 

Most likely engage the brake controller gain and let the trailer straighten out and slow the vehicle down a bit.

 

Tried letting off of the throttle and coasting, but it wasn't improving (may actually have been getting worse) so I eased onto the brake controller and the throttle and she came out of it. The rest of the highway stretch was done at 60, though.

 

Yeah, when I lost a tire before it was just a steady pull to one side, pretty easy to manage. This had my palms sweaty and definitely upped my heart rate.

 

Hey, you were calm enough to know what to do and when to do it, and the order of operations/priority. Take off the throttle first, then give it some throttle + trailer brakes.

 

Usually hitting the gas is better than the brakes when it comes to trailer sway

 

or hit the trailer break and continue on at same speed

 

I am very happy with my new JBA UCAs! I just got back from an alignment, and he was able to get over 4 degrees of caster on both sides (4.2 for driver and 4.4 for passenger). Truck drives like a dream now!

 

Youtube is full of videos of people that do NOT know that.

 

Right, they just panic brake and try to fight it.

 

I know but that doesn't work when you don't have a brake controller or the trailer doesn't have brakes.

This is why I am not a proponent of surge brakes. What's the law in Mass, 3k or 4k lbs needs brakes?

either way. You can still get sway that will pull you into a ditch with 2.5k lbs and either way that’s legal without a brake controller, if you don’t know what you’re doing.

 

Has anyone noticed gas stations switching to winter blends yet?

My last tank was from Cumby’s (I usually do Mobil) and I am getting almost 1 MPG less on the same drive cycles. I’ll switch back to Mobil and see what happens but color me surprised.

 

Had this happen a few times with trailers and my strategy is to just go straight and not touch anything until it gets better.
