Yeah because a steel Ford frame won’t rust in the same conditions...

From fairly recent experience, my 2001 F-150 which I sold at 12 years and 135K miles that WAS driven in the winter here had only surface rust on the frame, nothing structural.

I sold the Ford because I couldn't keep oil in the engine and got tired of replacing oil pressure senders, rear disc brakes, and EGR valves. Not because of frame rust. Then there was the mild annoyance of rebuilding the front end every few years. Ford has the worst ball joints and tie rod ends in the industry. I owned one, and only one, Ford truck.

That Ford frame, however, would last 20 Michigan winters. My Tacoma? We don't know yet.

I called about the recall last week. While I was on the phone the service advisor looked up my VIN and determined that my '17 was CRC coated at the factory and only need to have the plugs installed. They were put in yesterday.

I would get that in writing if I were you. The 11-17 WEP is very clear that if it’s not CRC treated within 2 years of the original WEP notice, you don’t get a free frame.

I looked at the frame and noticed a film coating near the openings on the frame that had the plugs put in.

A friend who had the full recall done to his 2011 has the same film around the plugs.

my 2011 tacoma with 54k miles has been at dealership since 27 nov. awaiting a new frame. Does anyone know how long I will have to wait? Will Toyota try to get me to pay for worn parts found during the disassembly/assembly? Any info will be greatly appreciated

Usually it could take 1-2 months just to receive the frame from the supplier but that was with the 05-10 frames... now with the new K0D recall who knows how long. At my dealership I am the tech who sprays the frames for the recall and haven't seen any with holes in them, just wish I had more frames to spray cause it's easy money and definitely worth it for the frames.

My local dealer is pushing me to get this KOD frame recall done. I have applied Krown undercoat on my truck annually. It has a thick coat built up. Will the KOD recall affect my existing undercoat? Will my existing undercoat have to be removed anywhere? The dealer is telling me no, and it is only applied to inner frame rails. My hesitation is I don't want the existing krown removed/messed with. The people that Krown my truck said the inner frame rails are already krowned, and they would have to remove my exisitng krown undercoat to put the toyota stuff on. Does anyone know what the actual answer is?

The procedure includes cleaning and drying the application site. There is no mention of solvent removal of existing coatings. They are instructed to use a wire brush, an air hose, and to inspect with a scope through the frame holes to check for a specified level of cleanliness. The wax is obviously intended to be applied to a clean bare frame.

What they actually do to comply with the service bulletin will have nothing to do with your wishes and what you might be told by the dealer may not be anything resembling the truth.

If you comply or not depends on how badly you want the 12 year frame warranty.

I am a tech at a Toyota dealer and the only one able to spray them and as per the technical instructions if a frame is previously sprayed we are to contact toyota quality compliance and they tell us what to do.

interesting, thanks.. I am honestly not very concerned about this rusting as im very krowned/undercoated, and was told all those areas are already sprayed. Just trying to decide what's best to do here.

    I hear ya.
Now on my end it's a big money maker cause it pays me a ton and I get it done quick and perfect. Hell I've been handing out business cards for free oil changes to tacos I see on the street just so I can do the recall and my manager approved of that. I don't upsell anyone just the spray is what I care about lol.

Would you happen to know if they would perform this bulletin if my truck is out of the "approved" states for free? I live in Iowa and they use quite a bit of salt and liquid brine but for some reason it is not listed on the service bulletin.

It's actually a recall and has to be a cold climate state either purchased in one or live in one if im not mistaken. If your ok with sending me your Vin number I can tell you if you're truck is in this recall..

Yup, it was bought in IA by the original owner and then I purchased it 4 years ago in IA where I also reside. I was just surprised that IA and NE weren't included considering we have just as much cold/snow and salt/brine used as most of the states listed. When I was a Toyota Tech (until 2009) we did a handful of frame replacements even early on. But its been 12yrs since I have worked at Toyota dealer! haha I'll PM you with my VIN shortly

I was in the dealer today to get an oil change and the service advisor told me about this campaign. I didn't get a letter in the mail but the notices are on the Toyota Care website. It's free, takes two days and I get a 2021 Sport loaner so I said why not. The campaign could be a good thing.

I would get it done. If you don't and you later have a frame issue, Toyota could leave you on the hook for repairs.

So I brought my 2017 truck to the dealer for the frame rust service campaign in July 2020 and they performed frame inspection, found no frame corrosion, applied a protective coating (Nox Rust) and frame hole plug kits (not rust holes, just factory frame holes to prevent water getting into the box portion I guess?). They put ZKA as the service performed on the paperwork.

Now I'm getting calls from the dealer to bring it back in for the K0D. I tried to explain to the service advisor that I already had it done, but then they said if I don't bring it in, I wouldn't have the 12 year extended frame coverage. They were able to pull up the service record, but said "this is a new, different recall." They offered me a loaner for the time its in, so I'll do it, but I'm pretty sure they'll put it up on the lift and the tech is going to say its already been done and it will be a big waste of everyone's time.

Is my understanding of difference between ZKA and K0D correct? ZKA is the inspection to determine if frame replacement is necessary. K0D is the application of preventative coating. If they applied a coating last year, then they did KOD while performing the ZKA inspection, right?

Why would you not do it? Other than time you are not out anything.
