Shop Recommendations for Regear

Looking for a shop to regear my 2nd gen in the eastbay area. Any recommendations?

 

I used the rear end in Livermore. Barry did a good job on my gears and Ive sent a few people his way he has taken care of. Its a small shop.

Also there is shaffers offroad in Oakland. Probably alittle more pricy but a bigger shop.

Bringing this thread back from the dead.

I’m hoping that some of you who used shops to do the re-gear, if you don’t mind, would share what it cost you. I want to put 5.29’s in and add an ARB to the front, curious what the bill might look like.

You’ll have to pardon my ignorance, I’m not quite sure what you mean by prebuilt..

I can certainly disconnect the 3rd and the clamshell and bring them to a shop if it saves a significant amount of coin, however, if the labor for removal isn’t much I’d probably just opt to bring in the truck.

You can buy prebuilt 3rd members, with the gear ratio you want, and locker(s) you want. Most people go to East Coast Gear Supply for that. You then send back your cores for a partial return payment.

Having a shop install those is way less in labor cost then having them install everything from scratch. That is why I asked. For example, getting two prebuilt 3rd members installed might run you 850-900 bucks depending on the shop. Doing it from scratch is a lot more. I think it is cheaper all around to order prebuilts.

ECGS has a 15% off moving sale now too 10% off ARB lockers. . Check them out. That is the way most people accomplish a regear and locker install. Then you have the option of doing the swap yourself (save 850 plus) or paying a shop to do it for you.

I just got 3rd members with 4.88s plus ARB locker in rear from ECGS. After sending back my old 3rd members and getting my core refund it was about 2400. This was before the sale, so should be cheaper for you. Add about 850 to that for install if you dont do it yourself. That's the route most people take. I am not positive, but having a shop do the regearing and locker install from scratch is most likely more expensive. This is what ECGS does, so they are very good at it and are economical in the process.

Thanks for the clarification, makes sense and I have looked into ECGS before.

I don’t think I’ll have an issue doing the removal/install of the 3rd or clamshell, pretty mechanically inclined, have good tools and patience, just don’t have the experience or specialty tools I feel would be beneficial to doing the actual gears and drilling for the ARB locker.

I reckon I’ll give them a ring and see what all I need, some of their additional options confuse me (flange options, bushing, then some can be done with and some can’t be done with ARB, etc).

I’m also concerned on the return timeline for my cores, still have to find a place to help me tub the firewall and clearance for the 37s (yup haha). Wish I knew how to weld!

 

The ECGS bushing replaces our needle bearing in the front and is standard. You should check to make sure you get it. Presume you are doing 5.29s? Well you got a 500 mile break in period of the gears to drive mildly, so get it tubbed before that's done?

The return policy is 30 days. Then it is percentages off, I think with in 45 days you get 66% back. Over 60 days, 50% return.

Seems ordering from them with the current sale and doing the swap using your abilities is the cheapest route.

Im looking for regear shops in the south bay area.

 

I'm in the south bay, but still went to Shaffer's in Alameda. Well worth the 45 minute drive.

 

I’ve used shaffers and rear end shop in Livermore.
My diff from Shaffer blew up in under 1000 miles and he dodged me until I gave up.
I was lucky to have the truck towed to a gear shop Bakersfield and they said it was put together by someone who had no place working on gears. Maybe he has learned what he is doing finally. But I wouldn’t let him or his shop work on anything of mine again.

the rear end shop in Livermore did my last truck and the price was great. Have had zero problems.

Im sorry you had a difficult experience. Shaffers is a highly reputable shop. I trusted my truck with his capable hands.

 

He had a questionable past before he moved to oakland... and then when he moved to alameda.

hoepfully he changed and isn’t taking money from one job to pay off the work for another...

but the way he handled a botched d80/d60 arb and gear build, and a boxed pitman arm that the welds split apart with in a month...

And just refused to make good on it... let alone answer the phone.

Nah, I would never recommend any one to go to his place.

 

Wow, so you had less than good as far as an experience goes. What was your last Jeep like? Did you have tons underneath? Curious.

 

The axles he screwed were a d80 and a d60 and he built a boxed pitman that tore apart in less than a month. With no off-roading.
