So I’ve got a dilemma here. I’ve got a 2011 4cyl 4x4 with a manual trans I’m running right now. I love the truck, but sad it doesn’t have the TRD rear end for snow (In the beautiful New York winter) and for off roading. The power of the truck really isn’t a problem for me, I’ve always been able to get to where I need to go without issue. It’s got 105000 on the clock and otherwise in very good shape.
Now my dilemma is, should I build out this taco with the Locking/geared rear end or would it be more cost effective and A better idea Overall to just sell and spring for a Automatic transmission TRD from 2012-2015?

Be cheaper to put a locker in yours. You know what your truck has been through, if you buy a used one you have no idea

105k isn't that much by modern standards. If you felt you wanted the V6, I'd say yes. But if the 4 banger works, not to mention the manual, I'd just keep it.

How much could you get for your truck in your area if you sold it ?
I like having no payments and if your truck hasn't let you down I'd keep it, unless it's minimal difference between the two deals.

I just picked this truck up and don't think I'll ever have any use for the Locker rear end...Funny how our worlds differ eh.

I'd agree with this. The resale value on second gens are also extremely solid, and I don't see them dropping any time soon. Might as well hang on to it and save some money to eventually upgrade if you still feel like it.

I had a locker on my first gen and don’t remember ever using it. Did a lot of camping, elk hunting and snowmobiling. I ordered it with the truck new with your same concerns, but in the end never needed it.

Considering I won’t be doing any heavy off roading I think y’all are right. Are there any other performance advantages with the TRD vs Non TRD/my 4 cyl? Except for looks and shocks/struts. I’d replace those with OME or similar anyways. I’m more thinking Building for Overland and the 130 amp alternator seems very Helpful

Not to mention, the factory lockers aren't known to be particularly bulletproof. They work, and I'm sure it would be adequate for winter driving conditions, it's just that an aftermarket locker will likely be a better rear end.

Hey calvin, 2011, 4cyl., manual trans., 4X4, low mil. well maintained, you know the history, Would not think of letting it go. I did & am living very disappointed, wish I had my old 4cyl. 4X4 manual back. If you do, never ever even look at a 4 cyl. 4X4 with auto trans. they are terrible weak puppies & constantly shifting up & down. Can I ask what RPM your 4 cyl. 4X4 manual is running at 60mph. in hi gear.

At least you are wise enough to stay within the 2nd gen realm. Thought this thread was going to be a jump from 2nd gen to 3rd gen.

But there's plenty of life yet in your current Tacoma.

The factory locker only works in 4LO. Probably not super helpful with winter driving conditions other than getting unstuck from a snowy ditch. I'd keep your truck and put an ARB in the rear end if you want a locker

Just depends which TRD you are referring to. Generally a suspension and tire upgrade come with it. Not sure about your model, but the TRD Sport has a limited slip while the TRD OR has a locking diff with crawl control. The 6 cylinder will give you more power, but it sounds like you may not need it.

Compared to every other manufacturer I've researched, Toyota seems to keep their trims pretty close to one another. Take away non-functional visuals, add a Pro suspension/wheels and skid plate and the TRD OR is a TRD Pro in terms of capability. You'd have to do a bit more tweaking for a TRD Sport, but you get the idea. It isn't like the TRD models come with a larger frame or more HP (when comparing the same engines) than the non-TRD models.

I had a 2002 4cylinder SR5 that I took all over New Mexico forest and logging roads.
With the right tires and low range I never felt the need for more vehicle.

Just reread your post. On the slightest bit of side way slant and the rear locker will have you in the ditch.

Hmmm interesting, I knew the trims were close but didn’t know they were that close haha. Another thing I’m curious about which I can’t seem to find the answer to, is do the 4cyl come with an LSD? And if there’s an option for it, how can tell if I have it?

I would agree with this ^

A few more thoughts to add: Living in NY Im sure you're aware how nasty road salt and brine can be on a vehicle. If you dont already, I would highly suggest a yearly (or more) undercoating of Fluid Film, Woolwax, etc, etc. Should help keep your truck in good shape for a long time.
As far as the locker goes, if you want one, Id say add an ARB and be done with it. BUT I would not recommend using it in the winter. Unless you are already stuck and happen to need just that extra little bit of traction. The only time I use my locker in the winter time is if Im in deep snow breaking a trail. (Or if I want to rip some real good donuts :D) As far as on road driving goes, it will probably make things worse not better.

I wish I had a 4cyl for the gas mileage. My dad has a 3rd gen 4cyl lifted aftermarket rims, it looks great and runs great. I have a 6cyl 1st gen
