3rd Gen Tacoma Transmission Plugs

As many others have done on this forum I too drain and refill my transmission fluid. I started making a habit of this and doing the swap every 10k-15k miles. I never take the whole thing apart and drain every little drop. Instead I drain the pan and refill the pan per Toyotas instructions. A Scan Gauge II lets me know what temp my trans fluid is at so I am sure not to over/under fill it. My thinking is that at this rate about every three drain/fill cycles I will have new fluid in the transmission. I know it is not perfect but it is better then never touching the trans fluid.
When I first started to research what all was needed to drain and fill the Tacoma transmission I had a hard time finding what part number was associated with the fill plug and gasket. Arguably this really doesn't need to be changed however when I first tried to pop off the fill plug it was stuck. So many heat/cool cycles had glued that thing to the trans and I rounded the bolt head trying over and over to get it off. I ended up getting a Irwin Bolt Extractor in conjunction with a breaker bar and the plug came right out. This situation called for a new fill plug and gasket. Below are the Toyota part numbers for the 3rd Gen Transmission fill plug. The drain plug can easily be found with a Google search.

Fill Plug= 90341-18059
Fill Plug Gasket= 90301-15004

 

Curious why you do this so often? I know in the beginning of the 3rd Gen release there was a lot of talk about low transmission fluid, is this still an issue?

I am not sure if it is still an issue. I know my truck was about 2qt low when I checked it last after I bought it. Truth be told I do not really need to drain and fill it that often. However since when I do actually drain and fill I am only getting about 1/3 of the total amount of fluid out of the transmission because the pan only holds about 4qt of the 11-12qt that's in the whole system. So I figure three changes should just about put 12 new quarts back into the trans.

Tacoma owners, like me, are obsessed with spending money that does not need to be spent. LoL

 

Yep, those are them.The fill plug and o-ring are hard to find on the diagrams as they are on the extension housing.

If it's helpful, the recommended drain and fill practice is 3 cycles in the factory manual. The link below has the exchange rate for each cycle. For my Toyotas I do the three cycles every 50k and rather than one or two at less miles - it's all a balance of your time and opinion.

Great info! Thank you for that! I had no idea the manual even said anything about that. I bought my 17 used and it did not come with a manual sadly.

 

I’ve done two drain and fills so far and I’m at 53k miles. I’m glad I have. Last drain had gold glitter In the oil. I'll do it every so often, whenever I get bored or remember. I'm also gonna add lubeguard as recommended by @gearcruncher

 

Nice, I plan on doing a 30k transmission oci myself to refresh the additive package and also do this on my other vehicles. If I were towing, it would be 15k. Assuming you guys are using WS fluid or flushing and going to Amsoil?

I've been using just ws but I'm hoping the lubeguard will help. I'm not currently experiencing any trans issues but I can go through a transmission like nobodies business. 3 or 4 in my Silverado and 2 or 3 in my accord.

 

Im hoping this is exactly what I am looking for, I have a Tundra but this thread came up in my google search, is this a 24mm bolt? Commonly removed with a 15/16th? Mine came out super easy the first time but this time my 15/16 socket wouldn't cut it and started to round it off. I went out and bought a 24mm and got it off but I'd like to replace it and want to make sure I am ordering the correct part.

 

Yes this will work on the Tundra. I did some searching too and this info is kinda hard to find. My transmission fill plug was stuck the first time and I had to buy a special 24mm socket to remove it. The edges were rounded and this tool helped remove it with a breaker bar https://www.penntoolco.com/HA53912/ .
