Not sure which launch you were referring to but Antares does not have a booster landing like Space X.

    Got curious, started perusing:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_in_spaceflight
It does seem that most US launches are SpaceX these days, which does make rockets 'landing' the 'norm', interestingly enough. As opposed to the previous standard of Rapid Scheduled Dissasembly upon impact with the ocean. (is there a word for that, similar to lithobraking?)

If they don't land the rockets, then what are they doing with my tax dollars?

We are such a better position today. Initially we had only one game in town. NASA. We got to the moon and pretty much just gave up.

Today we have multiple for profit companies competing. Good ole free enterprise. More and better ideas have arisen in the last few years than in the previous 30.

NASA still butts in. But we’d be better off letting the private companies have their head.

Some years back a series of books “Star Fire” I believe, had some amazing similarities to what's happening now. When I see what SpaceX has done I think Elon must have read them.

The highbay isn't tall enough to stack Starship on the booster. I assume they will however have an overhead gantry to help with assembly of the booster, though I also thought the midbay would get doors and we've seen no signs of that yet.

Nasa kept everything inside during the space race to protect secrets. Elon wants competition, so he doesn't mind people seeing the design.

Space is hard. Spacex is literally the only company launching payloads into space and recovering the boosters. They can only get away with this because he super chills the fuel to fit 10% more into the rocket.

Government funding usually requires you to build to their specifications and this gets more and more complicated because of bureaucracy. Now that they have proven to be a successful rocket company they can find other funding that allows them to build the rocket they desire, instead of the rocket they are told to build.

Stacking happens on the pad, apparently.

It has to, the high bay isn't tall enough for both the booster and Starship. I was referring to the stacking of the booster ring sections to be welded together, that will happen in the high bay.

Isn't ULA the company that the government is paying $100 million a year to stay ready to launch?

    That number seems low.

All bets are off once Starship and Heavy become operational.

It's not obsession. They are the only ones showing us anything to be excited about. Blue launches baby capsules and then gives us short clips, eventually. ULA gives us bills and excuses. The Boeing capsule seemed like it was only half complete when they last tried to launch it. There was even a competition between them and Spacex as to who would launch astronauts first. Now Spacex is preparing to launch their 2nd manned capsule, and Boeing still needs to proof their first despite spending much much more money and constantly asking for more.
