So, I bought a new Cement 2020 Toyota Tacoma DCLB Sport. It currently has 4700 miles, and I’ll be driving it on a trip from Ohio to Louisiana. I’m taking it in for it’s first service before I leave. Even though the service manual says that the first oil change should be at 10,000 miles, I planned on changing it before I leave for peace of mind. A friend recommended that I wait until 10,000 miles because it may have “break in” oil in it from the factory. My question to you is, should I change it or not???? I would think that new oil in a vehicle could l never be a bad idea. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance for your opinions

Do it. Just change it. It's not that expensive, and you'll keep clear conscience.

Now, is it really necessary? Probably not. But if you will not change it, and it's going to occupy your mind....

You’re gonna get a lot of don’t change it manual says 10000 miles and change if you want to answers. I had them change my oil and filter at the 5000 miles/ 6 month inspection with less miles than you. Old school engine break in philosophy, synthetic be damned, and I own the truck. ;)

There is no 'break in' oil. The factory fill is TGMO.

    I'd change it.

TGMO is very good oil, the Toyota Denso filters are sturdy but filter below average.

My choice for a filter is a WIX for 5K mile OCI, or a Fram 'Ultra' for 10K mile OCI.

After a Blackstone analysis and TBN of Amsoil signature 0W-20 I was advised to go 7000 between changes.

I drive my truck hard FWIW

The old school engine break-in days are long gone.

Modern machining technology and practices have eliminated this need.

If you want to change it, then yes, it won't hurt anything. But there really is no dire need to change it.

Basically, you can, but don't need to.

There's always a break in period. It may not be what it used to be, but it is still there. The manual suggests the first 1000 miles.

I'd change it, it is cheap insurance. When you'd use conventional, it was always 3k miles. With synthetic I'd be comfortable with 5-7k. 10k is pushing it in my opinion unless you're always on flat ground, unloaded, never laboring the engine, etc. Some oils claim 15k, but they're classic cases of just what I mentioned above. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I change mine every 5k. Good peace of mind.

As expected, I’m getting quality feedback from this forum. For peace of mind, I’ll be changing it. Thanks again TW

Nothing, it's good for the lifetime of the engine...which may be shorter than some

Nope. Gone for you but still here for a lot of us. ;)
There’s still a break in period on a new engine whether you change your oil or not. https://auto.howstuffworks.com/do-still-have-to-break-in-new-car.htm

Just be sure you actually drain the engine oil, seems to be an unreasonably common mistake around here.

Engine break-in occurs in the first 1000 miles according to the owner's manual, so you're well past it. Whether you "should" change the oil depends on several factors, namely how long you plan to keep the truck and how much road salt you get in the winter.

If you DIY, be sure to have all the tools ready before you start, like a correct wrench for the cartridge filter housing cap, 3/8" drive ratchet, and breaker bar.

I do it just cause it’s fun to see the guys that think they’re gonna out engineer the engineers.

I do it for the amusement of total trust on engineers by some on TW. After all all Tacoma’s are perfect and never have issues lol.
Sorry, being an engineer that’s just my take on it. :D
