But what happens when you drop down onto a rock on the shackle and spring?

I've ran dakars with BP-51 rear shocks, and currently have a 63 swap with 16" kings. The ride is insanely better with the 63s. The dakars were always so stiff and didn't flex very well. I haven't lost up travel, I just haven't gained any. I did gain a tonne of droop though. Lifting the rear wheel with a forklift, I gained around 10" from ground to bottom of tire with all 3 other tires on the ground and the same front setup.

However, with a longer shackle pivoting from the top of the frame, like this setup, you could set the up travel to be much more without having the rear end sit sky high at ride height. The goal for me would be 16" of travel, sitting at around 7-8" up travel, and maintaining clearance under the axle.

Axle wrap is definitely a thing with 63s though, I will admit that

Yeah really. I hit my hangers all the time in the rocks. I would be worried about tweaking the leafs.

The same thing when you do it with a shackle hanger. Have you not seen stock trucks hit their springs or shackle hangers? I haven't had one issue with my 63s and the've been drug across and dropped onto rocks quite a bit.
Dropped down on mine multiple times as well seen others drop down a lot harder absolutely no damage other than some rash. You can still drop on the springs with normal tacoma hangers seen that with no damage.
I was looking at redoing my shackles and set up as well dropping the rear of the truck some and doing better shackles too. I didn't even come close to thinking of this geniusness.

I hope this isn’t a serious response. When you drop down onto a rock the springs and shackle has the ability to move unlike the drop hangers which will end up bending and tweaking your frame.

Additionally the springs move much more naturally with the shackles in this orientation which give the truck a much better ride. With the shackles pointing up they fight the spring and then when it drops out you loose spring rate when the shackle drops forward

Half serious question just because I know everyone on here hates on shackle "flips" primarily for soa because it puts the leafs in to negative arch. This is also primarily for stock length leafs. I ran that setup for a while on my stock length leafs and it seemed to work alright but that was before I started getting into bigger rocks. I know thats how a lot of leaf sprung jeeps and what not are as well as how 1st gen tacomas do their long travel setups. Was just curious as to what your response would be.

Side note, what happened to the shackle pivoting off of a D44 hub or something? Wasn't that the original plan?

Your truck was too light, the dakar pack needs weight to work right.

The typical shackle flip kits don’t allow for the shackle to be mounted up as high as ours because of how we changed the front spring hangers.

we ditched the d44 snouts for a double uniball shackle because we wanted to make the rear spring hanger have adjustment so you can tune in the spring rate based on your setup

The companies that offer them just offer them as plane jane without any real good "adjustments" or work as to where they should and how they should be located. They also don't work on setting them up for proper bump stop location and rely on the stock replacement set up which could be wayyyyy off compared to a flipped shackle.

Gotcha, I was wondering about the extra mounting holes on the rear hangar.

Side note: pm inbound about some front end stuffs... I was checking mine out today after a few good trips of hard beating and it's getting time for some serious love.

Got my gusseted spindles with the double shear steering kit installed today! I'm really impressed and feel much more comfortable now with those upgrades over the stock wimpy stuff. Comparing the Spindle gussets to the TC ones I use to have side by side, IMO these brace and are a little more supportive than the TC ones. Next on my list is the UCA Double shear brackets to go along with the UCAs and LCA mounts. Soon the axles will be going in. The stuff I have gotten is really a game changer as far as stuff on the market to beef up the Tacoma compared to DIY. Very impressed and happy!

Now to get my name on the list for a +4 LT kit I'll have the $$$$ ready in a few months.

At the time I had a ruggedized tepui tent, canopy, and full drawer system in the back, plus steel HC bumper so around 700lbs over stock before gear. My truck has gone on a severe diet since then and now is maybe only a couple hundred pounds over stock, but I do haul way too much with my truck, and have had it loaded up with around 2000lbs on several occasions with both the dakars and 63s.

Obviously with a tonne of weight they were softer, but I've found the ride with the 63s to be much better for small bumps, and flex way better

The different mounting holes allow you to adjust the hangar location which will change the ride height and spring characteristics. It’s cool to be able to adjust them depending on how many roof top tents and jerry cans you have

Well the wife does like to spread out at night so we were considering bunk roof top tents. This would be perfect for that lol

mine is nicknamed Princess Starfish for her ability to monopolize a king size mattress...that dual roof top tent idea is intriguing

Hence the custom fuel cell we are doing that can be run stand alone or with the stock tank so you can have a total of about 45 gallons :)

Yeah by the time I have all my camp gear + 37” spare in the bed and enough beer for a 3day weekend, there ain’t much room for more than a 5gal gas can. Luckily I’ll be trailer queening soon enough. Unlucky that I thought I had money and ordered a trailer, then found that list of maintenance/ upgrades I pm’d you about within 2 weeks of each other
