1st Gen Lunchtable Thread - General Discussion

I’m rocking the stock diff in the taco for now. But eventually it’ll be getting a land cruiser rear end.



I refuse to put anything not Toyota under it though

 

LC full float rear is great as long as it isn't the locker one that I have cause it has an extra long splines section that can twist :/

 

Picture of the ARB bumper installation. The bumper is for a 2003-2007 model Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser hoods do not have the grill attached.

A 1999 model LX470 will bump into the bull bar when opening the hood with a 2003-2007 ARB bumper.

The choices are to remove and relocate the light tabs or modify the grill mount so the bottom of the grill points in at a different pitch.

We decided to modify the grill instead of moving the light/antenna tabs. You can see how the grill is slanted in 3/4 of an inch across the bottom.


I need to get a battery cable that is capable of running a lot of accessories.

Also, I need to figure out how to wind up the winch while it pulls in a 1,000 pounds weight. My neighbor says to tie it up to a tree, then put the truck in reverse and let it idle. Then use the winch to roll up the cable while pulling the truck toward the tree.

The winch owner's manual says to unwind and rewind the cable once a month to keep the self-lubricating part working.





Now it clears the light tabs. It doesn't need a lot of room.




Drill an additional hole to shift the grill mounting pitch.



Added a shim under the front mounting bolt location to shift the grill inward.




The winch is mounted feet facing out the front.



Shifted the control box to the side. I might move this up behind the grill after I see how well it works in this location.




The next step will be to wind up the synthetic cable. I understand it needs to pull 1,000 lbs to properly wrap the synthetic rops.

 

I remember a thread over on ih8mud (iirc) where a dude with a 3rd gen T4R busted a rear axle shaft after running the Baja for several days. Had to leave it across the border in a tiny village while he went back to CA to get parts and tools to fix it.

 

Oh yeah, that guys truck build is actually a really entertaining read all around. Haha he watched his tire roll by him at speed

Interesting, I've only seen bent fronts (generally they all are ). Don't blame you for wanting to upgrade to ditch the R/P and handle more power

 

The front Toyota axles from the mini trucks pretty much have to have a truss haha. I wouldn't ever pick one to put under anything but an old suzuki but they're not bad axles. The Toyota stuff is just meant for light vehicles that came with almost no HP. Kudos to you for keeping it from breaking. You probably drive gentler than I do haha. Using them for long distance camping and no option of trailering (just makes no sense for how we use our vehicles) makes you want to drop all the critical components that are fragile.

 

They are usually bent before they even get trussed. My buddy built a jig to true them.

I totally understand, which is why I'm planning tons for the Tacoma. A Toyota front or 44 won't be worth the effort unless I stay in 35s

 

Anyone seen a toyota with unimog axles? There was a guy putting them on his chevy 14 years ago, but he passed away before he finished

 

Can't say I have, I haven't seen one with much larger than the usual Tons (ford 9", dana 60/70/80, corporate 14, or some custom fab with a ton center). Things like military axles and rockwells don't usually find themselves under something so small

 

Yeah, thats true. Tons is probably enough for something so light. This guy was putting them on a CCLB chevy with a 454

It would be an interesting project though if those axles were easier to source.

edit: i'm tired.

 

Can find rockwells sometimes from equipment auctions or my local scraper sometimes have em from construction equip. But yeah they're not so common on FB market for a deal haha

You shouldn't really need more than a 60 front under a Toyota unless you have so much money that dropping 6 grand on 14 bolt front makes sense

 

The local off-road shop in towns owner used to wheel a yellow 70s Unimog. But he parked it and it's been sitting for some time. I'd use their shop a lot more if they weren't always booked putting drop bracket lifts on silverados. Like for alignments and stuff I can't do anymore with the loss of my flat driveway.

Yeah was a whole unimog for sale in some small town outside of KC, something like $15k. Probably too nice to be anything other than a 80 year old collectors item.

Do people use the solid axles off newer dodges and fords for these? Back when I was sort of not really thinking about such a thing, a kingpin HP60 off of a '79 f-250 was the thing to have. Then again, i was hanging out on a chevy forum, so I guess they had different needs.
