KickerCS Upgrade with Kicker Key amp Install Assistance

Any tips on how to depin the metra wire harness? I've never done it before and I don't want to break it.

 

I used a really small sewing needle. You'll need something pretty thin.

 

Am I approaching from the pin side , or the wire side? And above or below the wire/pin?

 

If i remember right, stick the needle opposite of the wire side towards the top of the harness. Or bottom i guess depending on how your holding the harness. Avoid the center of the harness.. Stick the needle in and give the wire a little tug.

 

I just assembled my harness this morning and plugged it in to test and all I got was sputtering from the rear speakers...no audio. Any ideas?

 

Bad connections, incorrect wiring. Could be number of things. Got a pic of your harness? Did you solder the wires together?

 

I started to solder,but for some reason my solder iron wasn't getting hot enough,so I twisted an heat shrink most of the connections.

 

@destin_meeks sorry to bug you again, I've re-done most of the connections. My soldering iron isn't working, but I tried plugging all in and I'm still getting rear sputtering sound and no audio. The connections seem solid. I've spent all day in this and it's defeating me. Also the large metra plug is getting VERY hard to remove from the back of the radio...I'm afraid to keep trying for sale if damaging the radio. Do my wires look correct,and should I try new metra harnesses?

 

Your wiring harness (at least half of it) is wrong.

you have the radio output (Metra connector that plugs into the radio) wired to the Key output. That’s a no-no.

Your rear harness (green and purples) is correct. The front harness (whites and greys) needs flipped

 

Thanks @destin_meeks for checking that. Ill take another look at the instructions tomorrow and fix those. That would explain it. Hopefully I haven't damaged anything. I'm not sure why the larger metra is so damn tough to get out of the radio.

I'm just getting static/blown front left speaker?

 

There’s a chance the amp (or radio) was damaged. You originally had the speakers wired to the amp input, so they weren’t actually getting any power. They “shouldn’t” be damaged, but the same can’t be said for the amp and radio. They were trying to pump power into each other so it’s hard to say.

Plug the factory wiring into the radio like normal and see if everything still sounds fine. This will let you know if the radio is still ok. If it is, plug the amp back in and see. If you still have that noise, you have a bad connection in the harness or the amp got damaged

 

To piggy back off of this, you can also remove the speaker in quesion and hook it up on the other side of the truck to test individual channel wiring vs the speaker. Also, have you checked the speaker polarity?

 

I think I might just do it all, lol.

 

It looks like I need to focus on metra wires R30-2 and R30-7 for front left. I'm obviously not a whiz at this stuff, but that's looks to be it in the wiring. I'll check the speaker by swapping with other side. Also check the stock harness for any blown speaker sounds.

 

to calrify: you should be correcting the wiring issue first, then testing stock and modded

Anyone know what all I need to install a kicker key 200.4 to my 2017 non-jbl tacoma?

I am running subaru kicker tweeters in the dash, and kicker KS series in all 4 doors.

Would like to avoid cutting and splicing into anything. Not out of fear, but because I am in a hunch for time. Hoping to knock out this install as quick as possible this weekend.

Line output converter? I don't see RCA inputs on the key...
