So I'm driving through Wyoming, and I have noticed that in 4th and 5th gear, when I press the clutch in, the rpm hangs for about 3 seconds before it returns to idle.

    Any ideas?

    Normal.

Retarded, and extremely annoying, but normal.

    Update;

I just timed 12 seconds in 4th gear for the rpm to drop after the clutch was depressed, and 22 seconds in 5th.

    This is normal?

Also this is a 4 cylinder with the 5 speed, not the v6

Well, that sounds over the top.

How did you conduct that test? When did you start and stop the timer?

Conducted at highway speeds going down a mountain. It is 100% repeatable anytime, I just chose down hill to time it so I wouldn't loose speed and interfere with traffic.

Timer was started as soon as gas was released and clutch depressed. Timer was stopped as soon as rpm(aprox 3000) began to drop to idle (aprox 700)

While I think it should probably still drop some, this truck does have a habit of keeping the RPMs up while you're still moving, particularly at a high speed. If you're rolling down a mountain maintaining a high speed, the dumbass computer does have a tendency to keep the RPMs high.

You can see the same effect if you're coasting to a stop sign in neutral. The computer keeps the RPMs up a bit until you come to a complete stop, then you'll see them drop.

I recommend trying the same test, but do it in a location where you will slow down more while in neutral.

As soon as I get a chance, I'll make a video showing this happening.

I did try leaving the battery disconnected over night... made no change.

Just a update, due to work and the busy schedule, I didn't get a chance to make a video. I'm back in Texas now and the problem is gone.

It does seem to be altitude related. What I have noticed is, when the engine is cold(thick oil), it drops. When its really cold outside, like 23 or blow it drops(thinker air). When I'm below a couple thousand feet elevation it drops(thicker air). When I have the AC on and the compressor kicks in, it drops(load on engine).

Strange as it sounds, its the only thing that makes sense.

I did test drive and experienced it on mine when I had disconnected the battery where the RPMS would hang at 1200 or more even at a stop, like it was at high idle but never would go down. I disconnected the battery and it never happened again.

Most, if not all 5/6 speeds do not drop revs anymore for various mechanical and emissions reasons. I assume those of you that are complaining haven't had a new stick in a while; or at least a truck version.

Also, is a truck. They have truck flywheels, even if it wasn't the FI hanging the rpms it would be slower to drop than some cars.

I don't know what's to complain about anyway. I mean, i can see worrying about it, but once you know what it is, whats the big deal. When I drive a stick shift with a light flywheel I'm always feathering the gas anyway between shifts.

At lower elevations its not a problem. At higher it hangs really bad, and there is still a lot of momentum/torque behind the engine that gets thrown on the clutch and tires when the clutch is released.

Here is where the problem lies, when I'm on snow/ice covered roads like montana last week, when I make that shift from 4th to 5th there is still enough torque that it will brake the rear tires loose... Thats not cool at 55-60 MPH on ice/snow.

To avoid this, I have to press the clutch and quickly rev the engine up, which will then let it drop. More annoying, lets say for example I'm at 3500 RPM clutch pressed, and I rev the engine up but don't romp on the gas hard enough and the engine revs up to 5000 RPM, it will hang there, for at least 5 seconds, but I have timed it up to 22 seconds. At that point I have not choice but to hit the gas again and bounce it off the rev limiter to get the RPM to drop to idle.

Either way, on slick roads it makes it impossible to have a controlled smooth shift from 4th to 5th...

On the plus side, from 5th to 4th, it pretty much rev matches for me, so I don't have to do it.

    hmm yea.. that sounds abnormal.

I mean, of course you could be slipping the clutch all day.. but that's a pain.
Strange... Like I said, I had strange idle problem once, undid battery let something reset maybe. Which is ridiculous, but they aren't made in japan anymore.
