    Hey, Folks.

Because it comes up very often, I am just curious about folks who have continued to use the stock nylon oil filter cartridge cap. After more than one oil change, did you have difficulties or failures?

My basis is that I did an oil change at 5k because I was bored and had no problem with the cartridge cap. I'm coming up on the 40k service and am curious to see the situation after the ToyotaCare work. I have no plans or worries about the nylon cap?

We had one car with a cartridge filter in the past. The cap had no flutes like the Taco one does. Still, no issues in the 140k life of that car with 10 oil changes that I did. According to the state registration website, it is still on the road at any rate. :D

If there needs to be more choices, please let me know.

    Thanks!

    Have a good one.

Adding: Three oil changes done at home now. 5k, 40k, 50k, 60k, and 70k. The 40k was just a bit tight, but I have found other fasteners to be torqued to a consistent feel from my dealer after the ToyotaCare visits. Lugs and skids.

I think the problem that has been seen here are shops torquing it incorrectly.

I've had the stock nylon on 2 FJs, a 4Runner, a Prius, and my 3rd gen, never an issue with any of them

Mine was too tight when I first yanked it @ 10k miles. I just torqued it’s correctly and never had an issue since

I should add that the Prius we bought certified used and that sucker was the tightest of the bunch, it had been dealer serviced up to 40k. The rest were bought new and only myself did the maintenance

This style is way superior in every way to metal cartridge or spin on filter. (I can’t think of any single downside as long as used appropriately). Had them on many vehicles over the years, and never a single problem. But I also do my own maintenance, and many don’t seem to know how to use them and they will break if misused.

I do agree, esp for taking a look at the filter media after the removal.

But mainly, I am curious about usage issues of the cartridge cap itself since there is some much talk about tightness and failures.

It really varies, you have to understand lube techs are terrified of leaks and will double check the filters, which usually ends up in over tighten

I have a couple of filter tools, but I don't use the flute one very often anymore. Usually when its over tight I use the non-flute tool and chisel the flutes with a pry bar while keeping pre-load.

Factory is never over tightened for me. It's just the tool and the angle.

No problems here. My Camry Jut hit 105K. I've changed the oil every 5K and it uses the exact same cap. Toyota took it to 20K and I've done every change since.

    Thanks!

That is why I am asking about folks who have repeatedly done their own work. Other than the factory torque, like you noted, it is probably the only reliable method that we have to get something established here.

I'm not trying to make a personal decision, just gather up some data because it comes up so often.

Mine was vastly over torqued thanks to toyota care

I am looking forward to that moment myself. They have been great, even with the lugs.

    How about since then?

This setup has been around since 2004. It's a tried and true setup. Just remember that the housing is sealed with an o-ring not a gasket. There is no reason to torque down on it. A light snug is all that's required.

I had a Cavalier in the past with a similar setup, no issues on that one or my Tacoma.

    Agreed!

Good advice. And, that the torque spec is molded right into the cartridge cap.

Torque specs are stamped on the cap. You're right, it's not a lot.

Yes, but did you have any issues repeatedly removing it at home?

Just trying to prove / disprove a myth here. :D

Nope. Except the first time after the dealer did it.

No issues with mine, but I never used toyota care.

Our highlander came with the aluminum cartridge and we did use toyota care for the two oil changes on that car. It was super tight the first oil change that I did, but has been fine ever since. I just did the 60k service last weekend with no issues.
