It's unreal what they charge...but it's supply and demand. SOOO many people line up to have them do it....DIY is the VAST minority. You're seen as a knuckle dragging ape if you do your own vehicle stuff around here....Nobody in my family did their own stuff until I started talking to them about it. And then my brother's kid is in a Vocational school and loves auto so he does a lot of there stuff now (a senior)...I just hate the rust.

People look at me like I'm nuts when I say I don't take advantage of the two free oil changes the dealer offers. I live 25 miles from the dealer. I'd rather pay $30 (more like $15 for the next several changes with the Rotella deal I got) and do it in my garage at my convenience than spend 2-3 hours of my time driving back and forth and waiting for them to do it.

I've also done every oil change on every vehicle myself since I started driving so some if it's wanting to keep that up.

Yep, they told me mine was "scratchy" when they took mine off, so you might want to actually take the tire off and spin the hub and see if it makes noise. It should obviously be silent for the most part. Mine kinda howled but only when turning left. It wasn't really loud, I bet I could have gone a while with it but I can't take any noise with my truck. On the GMC I had him get the best one he could and it was like $350 for labor and materials.

Here's a good one in the "What would you do?" category... Truck has a nasty rattle somewhere with the exhaust system. I figure it's a heat shield as they usually fail first and then rattle on the exhaust. Rattle is worst when it's cold and as the truck warms up it gets somewhat better but still there. I crawled under the truck and it's definitely not a heat shield or loose hanger, but it's in the muffler itself. Must be a baffle let loose inside there. But the muffler is solid and amazingly not even rusty.

So would the rattle just drive you bonkers? Seems foolish to replace a solid muffler just for a little rattle. But I can't stand it! What to do...

My original plan was to do it this past summer on my vacation week, but the kids got sick and I lost the week to myself. I'll likely do it all myself at 60K again. I just loathe fluid changes. I'll do everything else, but fluid changes are one of those things I despise for whatever reason. Suspension, exhaust, electrical, body, absolutely...fluids not so much. Even on my snowblower / lawnmowers / etc, I'll do fluid changes, but I just don't love doing them.

I think what goes through me is when it becomes quickly clear I know 10x more than the service advisor. Like, he kept quoting the automatic transmission fluid procedure and flushing it. Never again.

I should have just used the indie shop from Day 1. Lesson learned.

I took advantage of the toyota service, heck yeah oil change and tire rotation, I don't have to worry about dealing with it!? sure! I hate taking wheels off, 90% of the time/effort is getting the vehicle up off the ground, after that it's 4 seconds of work...then getting the vehicle back down. Had to lift my old mazda to do an oil change, that's one thing I like about the tacoma. Don't have to jack it up. BUT I do have to take the skid off.

    Dealer:
    • cross threaded 3 lug nuts on their rotation - techs had a tendency to just pencil whip the lug nuts and hit it with an impact before threading it on first. AWESOME.
    • I think, but not positive, had a hang in cross threading one of my skid plate bolts. Have to call the shop down the road and see if they can do a helicoil or run a tap.
So, yeah free service was nothing but headaches. From now on that will not be a selling point for me and I will not be using it.

Are you missing one of the spring bolts on the exhaust off the manifold? Or a crack in the manifold? I have/had both. It was very loud until it warmed up..I found out the welded nut of the spring bolt rotted out and the bolt fell off...
    $8.99 at aut0zone and a $.60 M10 1.25 nut from HD.

It's a bitch to get the socket over the nut up top...everything is in the way...A ratcheting 17mm box wrench helps BIGLY!

If it's not that it's probably a rotted out gasket on a pipe joint...

This was what mine sounded like...Self diagnosed from highway driving when driving straight would rumble but slight turning of the wheel or lane changes stopped it...

I had a leaking tail light from the factory on my 2018, so they changed it within the first week or two. I noticed for the next year that the truck had a rattle from the back and I always assumed it was the drop in liner. Discovered one day when I was waxing the truck that the tail light made an awful rattle if I bumped into it. When they replaced it, they lost all the plastic clips holding the light in firmly. It rattles if those are gone and you just rely on screws.

I guess I missed the Paw Sox becoming the Woo Sox. Pawtucket always seemed like an odd location anyways.

I figured out why the service price was so high. They used all Toyota fill stuff @ $80/qt, which is fine, except they didn't use the correct LF fluid for the t-case, they used the older LX stuff instead. I've done enough reading that I don't want to mess with the wrong fluid, so I'll see how amenable they are to putting the stuff in.

I think the summer of 2022 when I'm at ~60,000 miles I'm going to just DIY it. At least I'll know the fluid's right (eyeroll).

I did Amsoil 75W-110 in all three boxes about 40K miles ago. It hasn't exploded yet.

Inept leadership in worscester has NO lease with the team...so there is presently no need for the ballpark and the minor league team holds all the power in negotiations...
