I had posted this in armor & got ) responses. Maybe that was the wrong forum. Thought I saw some rust questions there....

Anyway, my question is should I use woolwax or undercoat/bed liner where the wheel well guard goes? There is some rust. Does undercoat post rust (primers) hold up? I would typically woolwax away, however how often am I gonna fight with those PITB push-pin/rivets?

It would be for both the flares & splash liner things.... fender liner yeah, that's it.

Myself prep work primer and paint with your favorite brand then use your sheep wax

Unless the undercoating or bed liner application is done perfect to often winter slop gets underneath and causes more harm

They are supposed to hold plastic in place, so I wouldn't state that they cause problems. More just a PITB to remove.

how are you removing them? what type of tool?
i had issues when i removed most of mine last year to clean out behind there (caked with much dirt buildup over the decades)
someone or two on TW misled me with the WRONG tool to use and i was NOT happy about that whole deal
once i found the better tool to use all i had to battle was the barely above freezing hands to snip them off
the aftermarket, non-Toyota ones, that i snapped back in look even easier because they are more flexible plastic but i have not attempted to remove them this year

NEVER EVER put rubberrized bedliner/undercoat/paint over rust, it will worsen it. If you want to put this, you will have to sand all the rust down to the bare metal, apply primer, then the rubberized undercoat

If what you want is to prevent rust, woolwax is the way to go. NEVER use a product that dries and hardens on after application as rust prevention. Moisture will eventually get behind it though cracks or chips, accelerating the corrosion process as it gets trapped between the sheet metal and the undercoating product

The same applies for the frame. The best option is oil-based undercoatings, like Fluid Film, Krown and similar products. But these are good only if you apply them on a YEARLY basis. Their consistency is both their strenght and flaw. They have water-like consistency and will creep anywere, into the smallest crevice and corner BUT this consistency will also allow them to get washed off on areas exposed to elements. This is why you must apply it yearly

I have a two pronged standard removal tool that came with the set of aftermarkets I purchased. Problem was that the "push" part, where one would typically insert the tool under, was flexible, so as I pried up the plastic folded & went right in between the prongs on the tool. I ended up using a sharp knife, inserting it in between the fender guard & the pin & working at 'em that way. There were some up in the well that popped off cuz they were a different type of pin - larger thicker head....

Two prongâ tool is a junko what I first tried and darn near scratch me nice black paint
Try a side snippin' cutter/diagonal cutting pliers instead of that knife and snip at the heads on the edges, it seemed to work a bit better snapping them off, slimmer the better!

In my case those plastic pieces were long removed before I bought the truck.

I will have to look again but other then paint nothing special as far as protection and no major rust like the frame
