Would government confiscation of personal firearms be an act of tyranny?

I think we all know the answer...

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”

Give me my guns or give me death.

It is a death sentence for citizens who are prohibited from lawfully owning firearms. Criminals will always find a way to arm themselves and commit crimes. They will definitely go out of their way to arm themselves when they know the majority of the populace is unarmed.

Agreed 680. We do have some serious problems much more so than gun control. BUT, without getting off topic from the original post, I would not shoot anyone for taking my gun. If hiding them is not an option I would begrudgingly hand it over and seek an alternate means to exercise my rights. THAT is what makes our country great, peaceful transitions and working out our differences, not killing our fellow countrymen/murder. I care much more for my family than to just start shooting b/c someone wants to take my toy away. There are plenty of ways to fight back other than violence. MLK Jr. was a great example how peaceful negotiations can be successful.

first off...the wild wild west was way safer....our problems are due to socioeconomic problems and the nanny state....our dollar is collapsing because of loose fiscal policies and the entitlement class has tripled....and ive never been to disneyland but i go to disneyworld often and i always carry a gun because i care about the safety of me and mine

Guns certainly did not cause this country's problems. The problems were caused by idiots in power who created a welfare state, opening too many avenues for corruption and easy sleazy living.
Lawyers -who would file any suit, regardless of its merits, determined that people are not responsible for their own actions and that parents would not be allowed to raise their children with discipline- are equally to blame, and often the same people creating the welfare state.
Those of us who still believe that a man should have to work honorably in order to live are a formerly silent, meek majority... but the time is coming to speak loudly and forcefully for our beliefs. Honor will eventually be restored to this country- but the transition may be bloody. That is why we're arming ourselves.

Edit: I made this in response to a post I read by 680680- a bit late, I'm sure, but I'm a lot slower these days. As for certain comments to it: The points I made were completely missed and what you responded to was taken out of context. At which point, rather than argue, I'll smile, shake my head, and walk away.

Dimonback, that is GREAT analysis of some of the socioeconomic issues that make personal defense a requirement. Maybe even an obligation. This type of resolve is what makes us Americans. It makes us different.

Sorry if you don't get it, 680680. I don't expect you to. You're from Canada. No disrespect intended, of course. And obviously you have not spent much time in a variety of places in the US that are in no way like the Wild West. In the big cities crime is a big problem. It is in almost ALL big cities in most countries.

What about the guy in Canada that decapitated a fellow passenger on a bus for asking him to stop bothering another passenger? Bad people are everywhere. Take the blinders off.

Sorry if the tone of this response is rather terse. I just happen to think your opinion is not well-founded. And as an American, I take exception to you comparing this country to "a third world sh*thole."

If the sh*t does hit the fan, guess who will be covering your ass in Good 'ole Canada?

America: Love it or leave it. Or stay in Canada.

Edit: This response is to one individual, and is not intended to offend any of my friends up North. Please take it in that context.

The ability to defend one's self is one of the most basic needs of ANY species.

Those that try to take that right, out of ignorance, quite literally, have a moral compass with worse standards than that of bacteria. They should be dealt with, in love and with a soft hand.

Those that try to take that right, out of knowledge are the worst kind of sociopaths imaginable. They judge themselves to be morally superior to God Himself. They should be dealt with swiftly and coldly.

    This is crazy talk.

I'll agree the Welfare system needs an overhaul, but placing the blame squarely there and talking about violent revolution is why people get stereotypes of militiamen and crackpot vigilantes in their heads.

Let's not forget the immense amount of government and corporate corruption and greed stepping on the backs of the middle and lower classes that plays into the whole deal.

There are a lot of needy people who benefit from the Welfare system. There's a lot of shitbags, too. Lumping them all into one category and blaming them for the countries problems is extremely narrow-minded.

Talking about a violent overthrow of the government will get you on some watch lists and is a short track to a straight jacket and a padded room.

For probably the first time on this thread, Lost_Humanity, x2.

While I disapprove of overzealous and irrational gun grabbing and fear of guns without an understanding of what they are and how they work, I also wince when I see people jump overboard with calls for revolution.

Let's be rational, people. Guns are excellent tools to level the playing field in the arena of physical confrontation, be it between woman and mugger, man and deer, or yes, overreaching government and citizen.

However, I don't think we're anywhere close to needing any kind of revolution in the US, come on.
