    Friends and fellow rocket surgeons:

I have to ask a super dumb question here. I had my truck in for service today (what a CF) and asked for the flash from either TSB-0058 or 0125 for the surge to get a newer tune on my 2016 6MT. The desk guy was clueless but didn’t immediately say no, so I walked him through both TSBs, explained they were warranty items, etc. He brought in another guy and that’s where the weirdness happens.

Guy #2 is very familiar with the flashes because of transmissions says oh yes, to fix shifting issues. I said, well, I have a manual but I'm not a fan of the non-linear throttle repsonse and would like to get that adjusted and I know the newest ECU tune helps a bunch. He's like yeah, it changes the shift points and smooth things out (wtf?) but I more or less just yes him to death because at least at this point they're going to hook up the computer and that in itself is progress.

After cancelling the transmission fluid change because the service writer was like oh it's $340 for a flush and a gentle nudge of it's a manual, it's a drain and fill didn't work (even after claiming he talked to his tech and they have to get the truck up to temperature to check the level, etc etc) I ended up getting the rest of the service done and the truck back. The service writer was happen to inform me that they did an ECU flash on the truck. I look at my service receipt and they did TSB-0077-16 which is a shift improvement enhancement for the auto transmission only, not the manual. However, it's an ECU flash as well. Now the silly question. Did I get a flash? What flash did I get? I'll have to get TechStream working to look at it, right?

Yes you got an update and that TSB says auto only but also covers manual transmissions according to ECUs listed. Any ECU flash will automatically get you the newest ECU so you should be on 04014 now

    amazing. just amazing, these dealers.

@inksin is right, at least most likely right in your case. the tsb was mislabeled in the beginning and it was a headache for many MT owners because it was mistakingly or incompletely labeled for ATs. look up @tonered and @Shellshock 's sigs to refer to the tsb threads.

    but look here first:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/
    [:facepalm:go home Dave yer drunk]

are you able to confirm what ECU calibration you now have? you're looking to get on 04B14, the latest for the MTs.

    LoL!

@inksin knows some shit, but with that TSB number I cannot say for sure if you got 04B14. That TSB is TSB-0043-19.

The best way to tell what you have, if you don't have a Tactrix, is to use a Bluetooth adapter and the OBD Fusion or the Carista apps. They will tell you your ECU ID.

Even if you are on 04B13, you should feel a huge difference.

I can't get an ECU calibration with a ScanGauge, right? I need the Tech Stream / Tactrix option? I haven't gotten around to installating the software, nor has my friend who has a 4Runner and a Tactrix cable.

I've read through the first post, which is why I was trying to figure out why they called out specifically 0077, which would have only put me on 04B13 at best.

Let's hope the dealer is just dumb with their text, because in that TSB the only flashes listed are 04B0x, which would put it as an auto. Knowing my luck they never flashed it. I'll fire up my old laptop, load the software, borrow the cable and see what happens. I was just curious if ANY connection to TechStream would automatically flash the latest and greatest applicable calibration.

I haven't played with ECU tuning since AccessTuner Race, so I'm a sad, sad n00b.

    See my post above.

I'm a total flash newb, but TS and OVT are pretty easy with a few thorough reads and flashes.

Fair enough. Let's do some reading and brick some ECUs! I've actually followed a bunch of your posts on the TSBs and ECU flashes. If i wan't such a klutz I'd have just avoided the dealer and DIY it. The funny thing is half my work is automation systems and flashing coding in and out of controllers all day, yet somehow this concerns me.

I spend 8h a day dealing with software which is perpetually broken. Of course no embedded systems and no real hardware involved but still, when you know all the things that can go wrong, you err on the side of caution.

I'm half tempted to drive north to have tonered walk me through it (I could put a keg behind the passenger seat for him...)

Sounds like you got hooked up. I'm crossing my fingers and thinking I might throw the $600 at the dealer to change my spark plugs if they agree to do the flash as well. Though I'm also fairly tempted to try my hand at the plugs myself...

Definitely with you on not paying $340 for a flush.

There's no chance of bricking when reading with an OBD adapter. Only a slight chance when doing TSB flashes.

No need for that, but I'd be happy to head south part of the way for some camping.

Greetings from the pizza place. Took the truck to test the drive. It still has a noticeable surge at 3,500 but feels a bit peppier down low. I have my doubts I was flashed.

Time to swipe my buddy’s Tactrix and confirm.

:rofl:I wish I could say I know some shit but I had to look it up to refresh my memory cause I remember trying to get that TSB when it came out to get my ECU updated from the dealer. It was a big research thing for me to remember TSB# and remember the trigger words to get an update done. On my Island all 3 Toyota dealers are the same owner so you get denied at 1 then there is no Plan B :duh:.
After that I learned about Techstream and haven't gone back yet.
Anyway, that was the long story.
As far as I'm aware, because the dealer TS is online and always updated, I'm fairly sure that once a new ECU ID is released as a TSB I believe it'll supersede all previous ECU IDs. I don't think the dealer can selectively pick what ECU ID to update to.

Yes. Only OVT is going to fix the boost at 3,500. The TSB are more about just relaxing the shifts and getting a bit more torque.

You were key in getting some of the CUWs!

    Thanks!

    That's a deal! :duh:

I finally added the Mexican Market ECU info to the 1st Post. I do not have the CUW filenames or files though. I can add them if we get them.

Actually it was just sarcasm, but I have no complaints with the stock tune.
