Leaking Sunroof/Moonroof

Second thoughts....you should have NO thoughts of pursuing it.

 

The moon/sunroofs are badass. The degree of drip depending is normal and it drains. No big deal. It’s awesome to pop that sucker open w the windows down and cruise around. People saying they are So glad they don’t have one sound kinda corny. Your going to have just as many issues w the roof as you will w any other electronics in the truck. Is it One more thing that Could break. Yes. But I wouldn’t be shocked to see the thing operate for 15yrs wo issues along w the rest of the motors in the truck. Same guys saying they’d never get a moonroof do god knows what else to their vehicles that aren’t considered “good” for them.

I checked mine out today after seeing this thread. Since it goes above and below the threshold, I often wondered how it sealed and how well the seal will hold up. It has been raining most of the night so it was a good chance to see it.

I saw about 3 drops hanging down around the seal of my 2017. But I felt a lot better about it when reading here that there's a dedicated tray designed to drain this away. Not only that, but I also realized that far less water penetrated the sunroof than comes in through the door when getting in and out.

In short, fret about it if you like, but as has been pointed out earlier, it is a controlled leak as all sunroofs are and it isn't like it was overlooked by the manufacturer. If it still worries you, just don't get a sunroof.

 

My buddy had two Ford Raptors with the same issue, the dealership told him that was normal as long water stays on the channel, nothing to worry about. He end up talking to other raptor owners and they have experience the same thing. I guess it’s normal to a certain point?

 

Of course it's normal. If it leaks to the seats or floor, then it's the problem. The water from leaking sunroof to the drains in the pillar or something (however it's designed) which it's normal. Just like AC leaks via the heater hose out of the way so the frame won't get rust from it.

 

This is why I didn't get the premium package on my truck and I'd never use it anyways.

 

Just make sure you check the moonroof drain holes often and clean any debris you find there. Ask me how I know!

 

My mom has 2015 Jeep with moonroof. She never drive it for awhile... left it in hot sun during summer and cold snowy winter. She has no leak so far.

Long time ago, I remember 70's/80's vehicles had sunroof but they didn't have tray/channel like decent cars have that leaked into seats..

That's why factories made changes for better.

No need to be paranoid about it. It's only dripping into the tray/channel.

 

Yeah, I ended up feeling up there in the channel for water and there was barely any. It has rained pretty much all day in addition to last night's rain. Plus it seems like it would be pretty difficult to get the water to drop anywhere other than that tray during normal circumstances.

 

I thought that too. I also didn't want a black truck or color matched bumpers. I now have all 3 and have zero regrets.

 

Where are those at?

 

As long the channels are clean, no one should have any problems.

 

Yeah, it also depends how the moon roof is made. My brother's old Grand Am had it where it would open by sliding back over the roof so when it sat down, it was on top of a seal. That worked great. This one goes both above and below the roof so that's not an option. Definitely more aero though.

 

I understand that. If it leaks, then contact the dealer for fix depends on the warranty.

If not covered, then the owner should pay or get other vehicle. You know?

 

Yeah. They all leak a little, but it looks like Toyota anticipated that in their design, which is actually more genius than I thought when I took a closer look this afternoon. Upon opening it to vent, the tray angles and catches anything that would come in from outside too.

 

Definitely good for future reference!

 

When you open the sunroof and pop your head out look real close at the righthand corner of the opening - you will see a hole about 1/8" or so in diameter, that's the front passenger side drain hole. If you look at the lefthand corner of the opening you will see the same thing - that is the driver side drain hole. Keep them free of debris and you shouldn't have any problems with leaks into the cabin.

 

Do you know where they drain out to below the truck? The videos were helpful, but it was on an older model 4Runner.

I went back for my 5k maintenance on my Pro. I told them about the sunroof and they told me the same exact thing as last time...They are designed to do that. Let them know when it hits the interior. Still blows my mind that Toyota lets it rain inside your vehicle and that's ok.

That being said, funny story they told me. They had one customer that was putting rags in the drip tray to "absorb it." Needless to say that did not end well.
