Is it weird i went out of my way to buy this for car camping?
I'm super stocked to try out the new camping gear. Figure it's time to upgrade a bunch of stuff.

More packages! The sleeping bag liners are cotton probably not the best choice. Cost $20 each so not a huge deal. I also have a Merino wool liner coming that I hope gets delivered before my trip.

 

Those are likely old patents for some older designs. I highly doubt they would walk away from existing patents on such a successful line of products. The could easily afford the attorneys to squash any infringing businesses. Even Walmart. Walmart probably changed things at least the minimum 15% to stay legal and not infringe on any active patents that Jetboil or any others have on this type of product.

Jetboil probably has dozens of patents.

 

I was told they have almost fifty patents for existing and possible new products.

If you want the copied version, buy it soon. Any legal action would stop the sales.

 

They might but they certainly aren't easy to find. They have a lot of abandoned patents and some ornamental design patents. I can't find any active utility patents. For those not familiar, design patents just protect the aesthetics of something, like a Coke bottle, but are typically very hard to defend. IANAL, and Johnson Outdoors has a ton of patents, but searching through the USPTO patents with words like "stove" "cook" "heat" didn't drum up anything active that looks like a jetboil style stove.

I did some more digging and found their patent infringement lawsuit against primus for the EtaSolo stove was dismissed: https://www.snewsnet.com/press-rele...ent-infringement-lawsuit-by-jetboil-dismissed. That was probably the end of that.

 

Get yourself an MSR, way better then jetboil or the Coleman.

Same, light and versatile. But if all you’re doing is boiling water and don’t mind an 8oz or so weight penalty then you can’t beat a jetboil type setup.

 

I bought my Jetboil because I only take freeze dried meals (and coffee) on backpacking trips, thus I only use the stove to boil water. A Jetboil is quick and easy to use, and I'm saving several ounces over my MSR Whisperlite with a "white gas" container. I bought the Whisperlite to cook anything, but found I really don't need the extra versatility for my weekend backpacking trips. Now it will be #1 if I do more "car camping" type trips...

also the Stanley stainless steel cup will hold two MSR gas cans on the inside if you ditch the green cups.

Someone returned this Yeti gear box (not a cooler) to REI because it "didn't hold ice."

Ref the Camp Chef Stryker 200 Multi-Fuel..
Maybe it has to do with the owners of JetBoil, Johnson Outdoors. They also own Eureka, Eureka is slowing down, and the Jet Boil has probably been made by Chinese companies for so log, just let them make it, and pay Johnson.

I prefer the MSR .. Reactor, Windboiler, and Windburner.

My Soto windmaster is amazing - not quite as efficient as a jetboil but way lighter and more versatile. Very wind resistant to boot.

 

My new backpacking coffee maker:





It was mentioned on another message board, and I had to give it a try. I have to give it a "thumbs up."

You add a tablespoon of ground coffee into the (blue) cup, insert the clear funnel, then place it on top of your mug. Pour hot water up to the upper line (where it changes from cloudy to clear) of the "funnel," and wait about a minute for it to drip. Enjoy!

I like this better than the Starbucks "micro-ground" coffee, which I used before. I grind my coffee fairly fine, and get a few "grinds" in the cup. That can probably be helped by using a slightly more course grind, but I'm OK with it so far.

It's only ~$12, so it won't put a huge dent in your wallet.

 

How is the cleanup?

 

Extremely easy. The metal cup (screen) pulls out of the blue section, and you just rinse the grinds off all three pieces. Takes about 10 seconds to rinse.
