Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Honestly it's nothing like what I'm gonna feel in a week or two when I take a Sawzall to the front and back bumpers lol.

 

Damn going all in right away huh,. Doing lift also. I'm going to have to follow your build. On a second note, I like your pick of color but feel kinda bad for all the pro owners that payed over premium price just to get that color then have Toyota bend them over a year after.

 

Appreciate the perspective and thoughts. Some of my goals:

• Will need another set of tires in about 5k miles. The stock GYs have been good dailies, but longevity is a bit lame for the price.
• I plan on towing next year with a hitch weight pushing 450-500, so a tire with a heavier rating would give some peace of mind and functional value.
• A little bit of additional clearance rarely ever hurt anybody.
• Don’t want to mod the frame or body, so I’m not going wider than 265 or taller than 33 (31.5-32.5 would be optimal).
• Sticking with the stock rim.
• Additional longevity would be great.
• Road manners are important.
• I don’t particularly care about what *others* think the truck looks like, but *I* care about what it looks like, so that’s where the tall skinny is coming in. Call me vain, but I’m honest enough to admit it.
• A C or D rated 255/80/16 would seem to check the boxes, but nobody makes that.
• Looking for the peace of mind a more aggressive tire than the stock GY will give. There isn’t much of anything more embarrassing than getting stuck in a wet grass field in your 4x4.
• And finally there’s the whole enjoyment of the build... no matter what direction you go.

I appreciate the push towards ‘buy what you need, but first figure out what you need’. What I currently *need* is a longer lasting GY Kevlar. What I’ll need about 5-10k after I change tires in 5k is something a bit more durable and capable. Thus the search for a light-mid weight AT in SL to D rating.

 

So, you know what you need them to do, and you know you don't want to do body work to make them fit. If you stick with stock wheels, then you will probably need 1.5" spacers or zero offset wheels to clear the UCAs. I say probably, because that will depend on the actual tire you go with. Discount Tires will mount up a tire for you and fit check it without charge. This will give you an idea which way you want to go between spacers or zero offset wheels.

 

I'm going to use the thing as a tool. It's going to need a little beefing up to handle it. Besides, I will kill that painted front bumper and back bumper pretty quick if I don't do something. And I need a rear/or mid mounted winch anyway. suspension will likely stay stock for now, I'm not a fan of drop in spacers and probably wont go full suspension until last after I finalize weight. But that will immediately change if I manage to get it stuck anywhere.For me it's much more likely to get stuck in the mud than need to climb some boulders. I'm not trying to get out of the nice truck into the nasty wild if I don't have to lol.

And it's partly a work truck, so some stuff the company will pick up the tab on if I can justify the need for it. (cough front e-locker)
And I have access to a full modern machine/protyping shop, and some minions to do my bidding.
This should let me do some cool stuff I wouldn't necessarily do otherwise.

I almost do feel bad for the pro owners. but if your not going to mod it they will never make anymore army green pro models so they are still at least a little special.

 

Perhaps this is why I’m waffling on size. I thought the common experience was that 255/85/16 on the stock OR wheel usually cleared control arms and didn’t require chopping of fender mushing. Surely a 235/85/16 would work then?

 

You might get lucky, you might not. After market wheels made sense to me as it gave me plenty of room to clear the UCAs. Someone else with stock wheels, 255s and no spacers should confirm this.

For what its worth my new 255 KM3's I haven't managed to rub on anything yet. and I was trying pretty hard. but I haven't quite got them all the way stuffed into a fender yet either.
Completely stock everything but tires for me. Zero modifications.

Have Discount do a dry fit for ya and drop it on the ground to do lock to lock for UCA clearance, or any other clearance potentials.

I have one pretty close to me. Will probably have to do that right after the winter season.

 

Oem 265/70 is 30.6x10.4
235/85 is 31.7x9.3
255/85 is 33x10
265/75 is 31.7x10.4

235/85 is 1” taller than stock but over an inch narrower. They look really puny. 265/75 will easily fit, has a nice chunky, proportionate look and is widely available in a variety of tires. 255/85 is a tad narrower than stock but just over 2” taller. Fewer tires available.

all three will fit.

 

Im really digging my 255/85/16 KM3 on stock OR wheels. havent had any issues on nor off road... still trying to find the best PSI for daily driving... I do have Ironman 2" lift no UCA

 

Has anyone had issues with mud or debris getting caught up around the UCA or in the wheel wells with 255's? I am not planning to get tires yet, but I am studying the hell out of them! I had 255's on my Jeep before I went to 35's, so I am aware of the capabilities of the mighty pizza cutter. I think they are an even better option on our Tacomas, but the clearance in the front makes me hesitant. As of now, I am stock, but I may do a 2" lift, mostly to stiffen the ride. I am not a fan of the bouncy stock ride. I was looking at 235's, but I have not seen enough photos to convince me they are not just a little too small for a 3rd Gen DblCab OR. I am liking the KM3's and the Cepek Extreme Country tires.

Well add me to the club finally! Was waiting for Black Friday, some sale, etc...blah blah blah....LOL

The taco rear driver side stock tire bit the dust this wheeling weekend. Kinda figured it would happen but fortunately had the compressor and was able to make it home!

Bit the bullet and tomorrow the Cooper ST MAX in 255/85 R16's will be installed all the way around. Couldn't wait for a sale as I have another trip on Friday.

I was originally going to put in new UCA's prior to the tires but figured I would try it this way and then when I install the new suspension/UCAs will see how it does!

Thanks to all the folks in here. With the stuff I throw at the tires, it was just a matter of time before I killed the stock ones. Only 15k miles on them but they needed to go.

 

My st maxxs aren't overly rough. They aren't louder than stock. I daily mine and it hasn't been an issue at all.

 

Finally got my s/t maxxs installed
