    Hey Guys!

Ive got a long one but hoping I can get some guidance on this. For the last few months my Taco has been doing this weird thing where every 8-10 starts the truck will immediately turn off. I would start the truck back up and it would turn on and run just fine. Took it into a mechanic and he recommended and the recommended a fuel injection cleaning and air filter cleaning. Ran great for a week and the same thing happened. I took it back in and they said it might be the Mass Airflow Sensor so we replaced that and then a few days later the same thing started happening again.

Then out of the blue it stopped happening! The truck was turning on and off as normal for almost a month. I was ecstatic... until last week when it started up again and this time much worse. Now every time I start the truck it turns off immediately and I have to give it gas to start the second time. And to make matters worse it almost feels like the truck has no power. I try to hit the gas to get up to 45+ mph and there’s just nothing. I equate it almost to the truck having asthma and is just out of breath when I work it too hard. Every so often the battery light will blink as well.

I’m trying out a new mechanic on Monday cause I got sick of my last mechanic, so I’m posting this in the hope that someone has had a similar issue and they can point me in the right direction for my new mechanic.

    Thanks you ahead of time!

I think he's taking it to another mechanic instead of playing a who done it guessing game with his truck with online arm chair quarterbacks, maybe you'd be better off to stick with the Agatha Christie mystery novels and let a professional diagnose the vehicle

Agree with this...Likely failing fuel pump. I would also recommend new spark plugs if they have never been replaced.

Im no mechanic but it does sound like a fuel pump. But also I noticed you have a 2012 does the secondary air pump have anything to do with the way its acting?

The fuel pump has 2 windings? I thought the speed of the pump was controlled by a resistor, switched in and out of the pump circuit by the ECU.

Avoid mechanics who “think” it’s something. Find a mechanic who waits until he knows what rhe problem is before he fires the parts canon.

You're right, not two windings, but two speeds and it usually can only supply 40psi for idle, so it will mislead the gauge readings.

A voltmeter across the fuel pump wires will confirm the resistor operation then. Long leads into the cab, go for a drive and see what the meter does.

    Definitely find another mechanic.

Your first "mechanic" works by throwing parts at it based on guess. Good for his profit, bad for your wallet

The next guy you need to be sure to ask "What is causing the problem?" and "What is the proof?"

Not that familiar with the Toyota engines, but, had an old Dodge Ram 150 having same symptoms. Timing chain problem.
