Bilstein 5100s or 5125s with Dakar Leafs?

    Which would be the better choice to go with OME Dakars, the 5100s or 5125s? Everywhere says the 5100s are good for up to 2" lift and the 5125s are good for 3"+. The Dakars are supposed to be a 2.25" lift so they seem to be inbetween. Anyone running Bilsteins with Dakars?

    5125s are not a single size, I think there are 3 basic lengths. They are sized by extended and compressed lengths.

    To be really accurate you should know the distance from eye to eye when extended and compressed. To further complicate, those numbers will be different on the driver side compared to the passenger side.

    The tech folks who sell Dakars should be able to give you more accurate advice on which 5125 model to get.

    My understanding is that the rear 5100's are made for a lifted truck up to 3 inches of lift. The 5125's are made for a stock ride height in the rear. Correct me if someone has personal information though.

    I was talking to DSM and they said the 5125 are for longer applications. I think the 5100s will work with the 2.25" dakars, but they are probably going to be at the end of their range. Someone must be running Billys with their Dakars that can share their knowledge!

    have you thought about using the OMEN182s they are designed to run with the dakar springs...

    jdbeck23 is right. i have 5125's in the rear with stock leaf springs, if u wanna raise it up with taller leafs go with 5100's

    Thats what DSM said when I emailed them. They didnt say yes or no to the 5100s, but I got the impression that they would work, though arent necessarily the best choice.
    So the question is, how do I calculate the correct length to order? I cant really install and measure some Dakars then run them without shocks for a few weeks while I wait for stuff to arrive.
    Would I just get a set that are 2-2.5" longer than stock length?

    even if they are 3" longer if will give you better flex offroad. 3" longer are fine... even when ordering they say up to 3" of lift so 2.5" is fine

    So I read on CT (via google) that stock rear travel is 6" & 6.5". So one 5125 at 8.6" of travel and one at 9.24" should work with the 2.25" lift? That would give an additional 2.6" and 2.74" travel respectively.
    Does that make sense? Can anyone confirm the stock rear travel?

    Yeah, I just cant seem to find overall length listed anywhere. The link to DSM posted earlier only has "shock travel", "extended length" and "collapsed length". Since they are custom/universal they dont have specific info for a Taco (or anything for that matter)

    have you thought about the procomp ext length shocks, they are cheap and ive heard they work pretty good

    I hadnt, but I just looked at procomp's site and couldnt find anything. They list some shocks for 1" lift and some for 4" but nothnig in between. Did you have one in mind that could possibly work? Maybe a link?

    Pull one of your stock shocks and measure it compressed and extended.

    you dont "have" to but for the best flex/articulation/travel, yes
