I was out having fun in an OHV park today. I pulled off for a pit stop and pulled the parking brake. When I went to back out, the left rear wheel would not turn. It just dragged across the ground. I rocked it back and forth a bit and it freed up.

Down the trail further I pulled the parking brake again and when I tried to leave the same wheel locked up again. From then on I didn’t use the parking brake.

wtf? This has never happened before.

It was about 40F, not cold by any means. I had driven through muddy water up to the grill earlier. Other than that nothing happened that seemed super stressful to the truck.

My only guess is that some crud got into the parking brake mechanism and jammed it up.

    Other thoughts?

Parking brake line is stretched, needs to have a little play in it.. I'll bet yours is taught like a tight rope.
Check where it attaches to the leaf pack

Probably a pretty straight-forward repair, but you're going to need to get it up on jackstands, get under there and figure it out. Apply and release the cable, and assuming the drum doesn't rotate, then start tweaking the cable all along the frame and see if it releases; if it does, you probably have a crudded up cable; if that doesn't work, your problem may be in the drum...

That’s plausible. I installed OME leafs in spring and it was my first time ever doing so, so I might have messed something up. It has worked fine all summer though. I’m not what triggered it to act up all of a sudden.

Some how it got stretched during leaf pack articulating today at the park.
You'll need to bend the bracket to free up the tension on it.

I checked both sides and there is the same amount of play (+1/2 inch) in both sides. I’ll see what happens next.

I’ve read some threads about e-brake problems but mostly when leaving it sit for extended periods after getting wet. Mine was having trouble after a couple minutes.

Do you mean water in the drum brake or water in the e-brake mechanism? Is there a way to prevent it?

Yes, moisture in the drum like after car washes or rain... in certain situations and trucks, the rear brakes are locking up after they sit for a few hours. This is the second known issue, beyond the stretched brake cable.

Tons of examples. Can flash over and stick pretty quick, extended time not needed. I've always assumed the shoes are sticking to the drums but never investigated it.

It’s not the first time I’ve driven it through water, but it might have been the deepest. It was also in a unique environment: an old iron mine. The problem continued long after the drum should have dried out in my unexpert estimation.

Pull the drum and have a look, the shoes may need to be adjusted.
