Hey Everyone! I have a 2004 V6 and I need to change the timing belt. The truck has 111000 miles. The dealer told me they needed to change the water pump and seals when they changed the belt. Need some tips!!! I want to do it myself, bc dealer wants 700+ to do it. Any tips?

All Factory for now, LOVE it that way
I think reason they say water pump is that they are right there at it.
to change timing belt you have to remove same thing as to do the water pump.
so its kinda smart to since there right there.
or I think it is at least.

this. every vehicle I have had the timing belt done on, I went ahead and did the water pump as well since everything is right there.

OP... Pick up a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for the truck. It will tell you how to do it in there.

If you are not mechanically inclined (like I am), have a reputable shop do it for you. Definitely change the water pump at the same time, I am kind of surprised yours lasted to 111k, a lot of water pumps do not make it that long.

Toyota quoted me $600 to do my first gen, but I had a local Tire Shop/Auto Repair do it for about $375 including the water pump. I would just shop around.

I'm a Master Tech and did my wife's 03.The water pump needs replaced too.The a/c compressor will need removed to access the timing belt tensioner pusher to remove, compress, and install a grenade pin into it.Thats the hardest part of the job.If you're not experienced it may be well beyond your ability! Good luck!

I'm doing my own on my 96. I'm getting a kit w/ Aisin timing belt, water pump, gaskets, and idlers for about $180 shipped. You can also get a tensioner tool for around $40 that allows you to not take as much apart, but maybe I just like more tools....

I've done my water pump twice on my 1999 V6 3.4 and that tool that costs 40 bucks is nothing more than a Stout piece of wire.(Use an allan wrench or similar tool steel material) Just remove the tensioner, place in vice on bench, compress, insert wire , once installed remove wire and BINGO, tension on the tensioner is done. Seals would be cam seals. Like others have said, once you are in there , you might as well do them also. Water pump cost was 112.99, belt was 46.00 seals were cheap, the things you need to look at are the hoses that go to the oil cooler(where the oil filter is) make sure they are in good shape, mine were wet with oil and swolen, so I had to replace them.(Dealer Item) Also time to look at a new thermostat, just because you are there. Just remember, the thermostat has a "jiggler" that has to face up. Other than that it can be done at home with basic tools. Good luck

Is the only reason to remove the A/C compressor to get to the bolts that hold the tensioner in? I obviously don't have the equipment to evacuate an A/C line and capture all the refrigerant so I was hoping to not have to remove that. Other forums recommended the Schley tool which can compress the tensioner while it's still installed? Have you used this or heard of this? Is there any other reason I need to remove the A/C compressor?

A bunch a cool stickers, a bada ass MetalMiller Tx Longhorns grill emblem painted Hemi Orange, JBA long tube headers with o2 sims, Diff breather mod, Red LED interior lights, Fancy head unit that plays ipod n movies, Also DIY install factory stuff like, factory cruise control, factory intermittent wipers, OME nitro struts with 886x springs and toy tec top plate, JBA high caster UCA's for better alignmnet and dey beefier too, Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs in da rear with the gear, U bolt flipper, Ivan Stewart TRD rims with 33" K Bro 2's, some bad ass weather tech floor liners so I don't muck up my interior, an ATO shackle flipper for mo travel in da rear wit the gear, also super shiny Fox 2.0 shocks back there too, all sorts of steal armor for bouncing off of the rocks like demello sliders, AP front skid, trans skid, n transfer skid, demello gas tank skid, and a tough as nails ARB bumper with warn 8k winch, I'm sure there's more

You don't actually remove it, you just unmount it so that you can get it out of the way of certain bolts. You keep all refrigerant lines intact.

The 4.0 v6 does NOT have a belt, it is chain driven timing.

OP, while it can be daunting, anyone who has a basic understanding of working on their own vehicle can handle this belt. Whenever we do them at my shop we replace: Timing belt, water pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, tensioner actuator, cam seals, and crankshaft seals. If you can follow a book, you can do the job yourself. You just need to take your time and follow the right steps. I have found that removing the radiator completely takes just a couple of more minutes, but SERIOUSLY increases the room in front of the engine to do this job. This Dayco kit is less than $200 and will only require you to purchase the camshaft seals and crankshaft seal, which are relatively inexpensive.
